Explorers: Tales of Endurance and Exploration

Beautiful book
This is a gorgeous book. I was not expecting such a hefty text, nor for it to cover so many explorers! Each 2-4 page spread is about a different explorer. There are timelines, maps, photos, and artwork that make the text come alive. I am a teacher and was worried whether the artwork would be appropriate for my 5th graders, and it is. The text, however, is at a high reading level for adults. I like that the biographies have illustrations and photos that will help students visualize the life of the explorers better. Very nice book for adults who are interested in history and exploration.

Engaging with great illustrations
Beautiful illustrations and engaging stories. Nice review of history in pleasing bites. The publisher knows what he's doing in this genre of informative, illustrated, large format, coffee-table-like books.

So You Say You're Tuff?
Your a big modern explorer. You have been on many an adventure. You have the best 'north face, Columbia, Rei' gear. You have scaled mountains with an great guide. You have driven a Jeep through Baja. Wow you have a motorcycle. So you think your tough. . . Did you ever cross the Sahara on camel? Lander did in 1827.So you say your tough. . . . Did you ever hike right up the middle of Australia? Stuart did in 1861.So you got a nice big sailboat. So did Cook. He took it around the world over to Easter island.Oh you've hiked the front range. Fremont hiked through and around the whole mountain range of the west. Yep a big fat circle. Denver up to Vancouver down to Baja and across Texas back to St. Louis in 1843. We really admire those brave journalists there in Iraq. Gertrude Bell beat them by 100 years. All right all right what am I gettin at. This is a fantastic comprehensive book about the toughest explorers that ever lived. Legends the likes of Amundsen, Humboldt, Shakleton, Hillary, Lawrence, and hundreds of others in a bold beautiful book. Filled with adventure tales, vintage photos, maps, data, trivia. Lands distant and dangerous.Men and women who reached extremes that we would find harrowing even in today's age. They lived by the adage 'i am prepared to go ANYWHERE, provided it be forward'. A big handsome glossy book that would make a great gift for any armchair adventurer.

Nice pictures, but has errors
I only got about a quarter of the way through this book before I stopped reading it. There were several errors; the one that topped it off for me was an long, incorrect explanation of how a sextant is used and what it is used for.I recently completed a course in celestial navigation, that included complete training and rather exhaustive practice in using this instrument, so I'm quite familiar with it.

I loved it!
One of my favourite one by DK. A very good introduction to the history of exploration, fascinating information from beginning to end, and as usual with a superb layout.

Good introduction
A good divulgative book. Easy to read, if you got no problems with little typography. A correction: Juan Sebastián Elcano was spaniard (born in actual Basque Country) and not portuguese.
