What's Most Important to Know?
There are only 2 things I want to know from a reviewer of this kind of music: VIBRATO and HOW BIG IS THE GROUP?I do not want a history lesson on the composer. I want to know if this group sings with vibrato or not. This Lausanne group most certainly does, and how! Therefore I'm pitching this version and going for Cantus Colln. (That's more what I want.) But why don't reviewers (the vast majority anyway) take notice of this issue of vibrato? To me, this music should be totally bereft of any such self-serving arrogant hindrance to enjoyment. The only comments on the singing itself (which should include vibrato) which I usually come across are such meaningless phrases as 'Total Commitment and Exceptional Feeling', 'a Deeply-felt Interpretation', 'a Competant Performance', 'a Warm Rich Sound', 'Wonderfully Balanced and Clear', 'Precise and Fluid, Immaculate and Alive', and bordering on the ridiculous: 'Like Full-Bodied Red Wine, with the Flavors and Smells of Dark Fruit, a Hint of Spice and Chocolate'. (I kid you not) What does all that even mean? Just say they sing with considerable vibrato, or with a little vibrato, or with no vibrato. Also I would like to know if this is a one-on-a-part performance, 2 or 3 on a part, a small choir, or a big choir. That really matters to me but I guess it's assumed that of course, everybody knows what this group is like, or nobody cares how big or small this group is. So, about this Lausanne group, They have vibrato and plenty of it. And there is no 'choir'. If the score says 'a 8', then there are 8 voices, which could pass for a small choir. And if it's 'a 2', then it's a duet. Simple as that. But after being tortured with all that infernal shaking they call singing I must definitely give an emphatic thumbs down. Get Cantus Colln. Might also want to avoid The Sixteen, celebrated as they are by the apparently undiscerning, for they have no qualms about singing with vibrato, but not as super-annoying as Lausanne.

Spectacular...from a single voice to the whole ensemble...A moving set!
This recording of the Selve Morale e Spirituale is a great deal more than it claims. Not only does it contain that collection of music by Monteverdi, it also contains other, smaller collections of his that are rarely recorded. I first encountered this recording about 35 years ago through the Musical Heritage Society, which included 8 LPs (remember those? I am dating myself!) What the current recording is missing are the wonderful liner notes, texts and translations that were included in the MHS release. Unless your Latin is up to scruff, the beauty of pieces like "Veni, veni" (Come, come to the water and drink without cost...)may be lost on you, although the recording is so heart-renderingly beautiful you will find yourself moved anyway. Corboz, his soloists, and ensembles were the top performers of this period of music(rendering Mendelssohn's Psalms just as beautifully on the ERATO label) lending it not only the expertise of their instruments (human and man made) but lending their hearts to it as well. The opening piece (one rarely heard) begins with a simple continuo accompaniament, but then begins to add instruments and voices, one at a time, until you are hearing the whole ensemble. Each piece is a revelation, as the mood, tone, and colour of each is performed, from the somber and meditative set of the "Pianto della Madonna" to the bright and joyful multi-part "Gloria." The set has been hard to come by at all, and at the current price (a steal!) it belongs in any collection of Italian Baroque religious music.

indispensable
