Secrets, Sex, and Scandal! A Solid Family Saga Rich in Historical Detail
Filled with secrets, sex, and scandal, the Werner family saga continues in this second volume of the five-part series by Belva Plain that began with "Evergreen."Taking place from 1891 through the end of World War I, a time when horse-drawn carriages were being replaced with automobiles and young, brash businessmen could make a fortune seemingly overnight, the book focuses on the next generation of the Werner family: Florence and Walter Werner and their son, Paul, and Hennie and Dan Roth and their son, Freddy, and adopted daughter, Leah. While Florence and Walter live a life of prosperity and wealth, Hennie and Dan shun such luxuries, working instead to help the poor and downtrodden. In many ways, the soap opera-type story is predictable and even at times plodding (the descriptions are vivid but can be overly long), but it's basically a fun and engrossing read. If you enjoy family sagas told over several generations, this is a solid choice. While "The Golden Cup" stands alone quite well, it's always best to begin at the beginning with a series—so start with "Evergreen."

Jewish Life in the Homeland and America
I am a faithful Belva Plain fan. This is as good as any of her others. I enjoy the history part of her writing in addition to the fictional people she writes about. She weaves the two together to make a very enjoyable story. I have come to know her characters intimately. I am making sure I read everything she has written. Next book will be #12. The Werner Family Saga is a very interesting group of 5 books of which I have 3 to go.

Loved Evergreen but this fell short
This just didn't connect for me, but I liked the authors previous work. I think there were too many characters and story lines. Some pieces of the book jumped ahead too much in time. Clearly Ms. Plain is very talented, but this could have been more focused.

Did not disappoint
As with all of Belva Plains books, this did not disappoint. A big thanks to Amazon books and it's sellers ! I have re- read and re-read all of the books in my own smallish library. During this corona virus, books are necessary for me. I re-acquaint myself with my old friendson each page. But I needed something new. So I ordered this, having read it years ago. Thank you Amazon and sellers ! We need your books !

but Plain is just so good. It is a long book
I'm tempted to give this a 3-star, but Plain is just so good. It is a long book, and I got a little weary with her ramblings on scenery, etc. She is great at describing it all, but I'd rather get to the good stuff! It does take several twists and turns, and is a continuation of the Evergreen Saga. This one is mostly about Paul Werner's life...I'm now on the 3rd book...Tapestry. If you've read Evergreen, follow up with The Golden Cup (don't know what the name refers to) ...

A great book to read. It will keep the reader engrossed.
This is the third novel about the Werner family and it didn't disappoint. It shows the family's ups and downs and their true emotions. It is a happy book and a sad one. A great read and once again I just couldn't put it down. Do read it.
