Modern Printmaking: A Guide to Traditional and Digital Techniques

In Praise of Printing and a Book on Printmaking
Modern Printmaking: A Guide to Traditional and Digital Techniques by Sylvie Covey is a wonderful reference of printmaking techniques and exploration of modern printmaking, as the medium continues to evolve. Ms. Covey provides excellent background history of printmaking and then carries the reader into the here and now with examples showing a vast array of artists. I think the incorporation of "known" and perhaps "not-so-known" artists is brilliant, as it is frequently those working in the trenches that produce not just beautiful work, but experimental and richly-inventive work. All methods of printmaking are explored in various detail with wonderful emphasis on etching, lithography, and specializations such as chine-colle. Ms. Covey's passion for this medium and for art come through in this excellent edition. The book is beautifully printed, with exceptional color representation of the photographed artwork. I think it makes an excellent addition to an art book library.

This is by far one of the best books on printmaking in the last 30 years
This is by far one of the best books on printmaking in the last 30 years. The graphics are detailed and instructional; the color plates of prints are inspiring. This is a great book for students learning how to print and a good reminder for those who've been at it for a while. Highly recommend!

Good modern view of printmaking
Good modern view of printmaking. This book covers most, if not all of the materials and processes used today. The images are good, talks the the various print makers was interesting. I was specifically interested in screen printing but that was perhaps the briefest section so some disappointment there. Although a good addition to my book collection, it is kind of a general view and probably not specific enough in any one process to be a technical resource.

When this book arrived I was disappointed and I am still disappointed which is why I would be selling my copy only a month after buying it were it not for the low price I would get for it. I have been struggling to understand what I don't like about the book. My first thought is that it seems rather dry like an acedemic textbook. Covering a wide range of printmaking techniques, there is not in nearly as much depth and creative uses of them as I would expect in some methods in order to ensure the book would have lasting usefulness and I suspect the number of secondhand copies available so soon after publication confirms my thinking. There is a background history for each printmaking method together with classical illustrations for each and there is an outline of the basic methods for each method. The book does also go into depth for some methods, particularly Intaglio and Woodcuts, the latter also being relevant to other forms of relief printing such as linocuts. However there the positives about the book ends for me. There is a lack of illustrations of contemporary linocut artists of which there are many and so few pages allocated to screenprinting as to make them hardly worth having - calling the chapter serigraphy doesn't help as that is academic snobbery since most beginners will know the method by its more common name; there is also little (if anything?) about collagraphs which overall makes the book useless to me as these latter methods are the ones | most enjoy. There are some good contemporary illustrations included but nearly as many as I would expect, nor are they particularly inspirational and I have found much better in other printmaking books. My dislike of the book may be due to it being more US in style than British - since I recall feeling the same about US textbooks when studying Psychology, although they did eventually come in useful for passing exams. This book is a textbook written by a university lecturer and if you want a textbook you will love it! But if, like me. you hoped for a book aimed at artists and written by someone with a love of creativity then don't waste your money on this book as there are many better books available for less.

Ottimo libro
