Steve (Harry Hamlin, Clash of the Titans, Making Love, TV’s L.A. Law) works at a Porsche repair garage by day, and by night reigns as the “King of The Mountain”, the most successful of a group that participate in races along Mulholland Drive on the hills over Los Angeles. In his highly tuned 356 Speedster, Steve races against both newcomers and veterans alike. Steve once raced against his friends Buddy (Joseph Bottoms, Blind Date, The Dove, The Black Hole) and Roger (Richard Cox, Seizure, Hell Hole, The Vindicator), but now his friends’ focus has shifted away from racing in favor of potential careers in the music industry, leaving Steve to reign as King alone. Steve is egged on by Cal (Dennis Hopper, Easy Rider, Blue Velvet, Speed), the former King. When Steve meets Tina (Deborah Van Valkenburgh, The Warriors, TV’s Too Close for Comfort), Steve is also torn between choosing Tina over his life as a racer and continuing being the King. Co-starring Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams, Condominiums, Elves), Seymour Cassel (California Dreaming, Minnie and Moskowitz, Dick Tracy), and featuring a hot soundtrack that includes Robert Palmer’s “Looking for Clues”. Directed by Noel Nosseck (Youngblood). Now watch this fast-charged action-drama from a brand new 2020 2K restoration!Special Features:-Brand New 2K Master -Interview with Star Harry Hamlin -Interview with Director Noel Nosseck -Theatrical Trailer -Optional English Subtitles

Finally re-released
I've been hunting for this movie since the 80s when I got my first VHS player and rented it. Quality is just OK, not a lot of effort went into it since I'm sure it's not a huge money maker, but it was interesting to watch Harry Hamlin's interview about the movie.

Classic car film...
Classic car film, pretty well done for it's time and it's cool to see hometown LA in the film, it looked different back then, haha. Worth a purchase if you're a car nut.

Not available on DVD or Blu-ray, so watch it here while you can! What a cultural time capsule.
I worked as a movie theater usher when this came out. Since then I must have seen it a couple dozen times on edited-for-TV broadcasts and fuzzy videotape in 4:3 format. Nice to see it again in widescreen in higher definition after 37 years.Deborah Van Valkenburgh (also from another late-70s classic, The Warriors) made an indelible impression with the song "Dangerous Strangers" (wish I could find the soundtrack for this movie with the complete song). The three male friends and roommates ... played memorably by Harry Hamlin, Joseph Bottoms and Richard Cox ... exemplify the fun and excitement of being young, talented and just starting out in the adult world with all the adult pleasures, and show what a "fun, hip lifestyle" looked like in that era ... drinking till dawn, playing Activision TV games, barely having beer money, making music, dreaming big, and avoiding the law while speeding on Mulholland Drive. And you've got Dennis Hopper in his batpoop crazy era with burned-out hippie words of wisdom like "It's basically a thrillmaker" and "You know what's worse than cars that don't run? Pushing cars that don't run. No, man, you know what's worse than that? Picking up a dead body ... especially when it's yours."Okay, granted, this movie is nowhere near Oscar material, but for those of us growing up in that era, it's a nostalgic time capsule of life before home studio recording when you had to suck up for expensive session time, timeless (and back then affordable) Porsches, the casualness of drinking and driving, and no cellphones, computers, and very few VCRs or other distractions besides the real world.I wish I could buy it on DVD or Blu-ray in this quality, but unfortunately occasional streaming will have to do. And it's a LOT better than any of the Fast & Furious movies by a longshot (which are looking even more dated).

Finally!
I taped "King of the Mountain" off of HBO in the early 80's, and that VHS tape was the only way I could watch it until now. This film looks great on Blu-ray.The Porsche 356 is such a cool car. And that's really what all this is all about. I couldn't care less about the acting or the music industry storyline. This isn't a film review. The cars are the stars. Dennis Hopper looks more dangerous than the night street racing. His perfomance is truely unhinged, but his rat-rod 'Vette looks awesome. Joseph Bottoms's '69 Mustang is a stud. There are cameos by a Ferrari, a Superbee, a couple of Firebirds, a Datsun 240 Z, and some Porsche posers in the background at a German car repair shop. Deborah drives a cool, vintage Citroën. Even the beater pickup that Dennis races is sweet. These are the cars that I dreamed about when I was a kid. It's a lot to fun to see their details more clearly for the first time since then. Looks like I can finally toss my old VHS tape.
