Tubular Bells and More
I like Mike Oldfields unique approach to music. It's always nice to have something different to listen to, and this qualifies.

Cool and very great capacity to demo my new sacd stereo setup. I had it on LP vinyl originally. This stereo version is way way better than possible on analog media IMHO . Plus it's very very good music content to j

All MIXED UP!
This review is for the 2016 2 LP Half-speed mastered release of Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells with the 1973 and 2009 stereo mixes.I was waiting for this reissue for a long time. Bought the LP's and waited with baited breath for it to arrive. Finally I had it in my hands. Carefully opened the package and slipped LP 2 side 3 on my turntable waiting to hear the original 1973 mix in full glory. However that's not what I heard. It was the 2009 mix. ummm. So I put on LP 1 side 1 and low and behold it was the 1973 mix. They got the labels mixed up!That's ok, at least the sound quality is really good even though the vinyl is dirty from the factory. Clean these before you play them!So the back2black sticker says I can download the mp3 version of the LP. Cool. I cruise over to the site and enter my code. Download the zip file and unzip it. ummm...There is only mp3's for one LP included. THE 2009 MIX! And only at 128 bitrate. If I remember correctly there are TWO LP's in the package I bought. There is a couple of other unrelated MO song mp3's included but that does not appease me.If you want a great copy of TB's then this is it. If you want a perfect package with everything that was promised? Not so much.Five stars for the original mix. 4 for everything else.

2 Disc Vinyl Tubular Bells (1973 & 2009 versions)
I remember when Tubular Bell came out in 1973, seeing it in Boots’ Record Department, and being intrigued by the cover. It was two sides of continuous instrumental music, which was not something that was common in the mainstream album charts. Most of my friends and I did not have money to make buying an album anything more that a big treat so I had one friend who owned a copy of Tubular Bells and it was shared around, as we shared all our albums then.I guess Mike Oldfield took quite a lot of time to come to terms with this album dominating his career and if you are considering buying on the 2 Disc Vinyl Tubular Bells then you know this music already. It comes well packaged. A buyer who reports received a damaged copy would appear to be just unlucky, that has not been my experience of Back to Black vinyl. The gatefold sleeve has extensive note inside and the individual discs are contained in paper sleeves printed as the 2009 and 1973 record covers. The discs are well made and the sound is superb. Naturally I have Tubular Bells on CD which sounds great but there is something magical (probably nostalgic sentimentality on my part) about dropping the needle onto the disc and hearing this music again that makes me feel 14 years old again.

Still essential after all these years
I was one of those who heard the initial play of side 1 in John Peel's show and went out and bought it the following day. I can't estimate how many times I have listened to it - original vinyl and 2 CD copies.I had to buy the deluxe version to get the original mix on vinyl again and, guess what, it still sounds brilliant. No matter what has happened over the decades it is still an important part of my listening. Will I survive to see what the 50th anniversary will bring?

Disappointing quality control
Like a few Back to Black releases this album arrived in a less than perfect condition. The album arrived shrink wrapped as expected, but on removing the shrink wrap it was noticed that the top edge of the album cover was split in the middle as though roughly sliced through. Presumably the album had left the factory in this condition. so perhaps Back to Black are shipping without any quality control of their products. I will not be buying any further albums online due to the quality problems and returning the album for replacement is no guarantee of getting a better product. Very disappointed.

Great vinyl
My second most favourite album, an amazing piece of music, presented on vinyl as it was meant to be. The disc was flat and there is no surface noise, this will receive plenty of play. Highly recommend and a good way to start an Oldfield vinyl collection.

Tubular Bells
I liked the recording of Tubular Bells and it arrived sooner than expected. By coincidence I had just watched a television programme about the actual recording which explained a few things, including the sound of this set of tubular bells from their playing and positioning. They were played on this recording using an ordinary claw hammer (which made them louder) and they were also positioned much more prominently than in a normal symphony orchestra.
