Quick & the Dead

Great modernized western with all star cast
Great modernized western with an all star cast. A mysterious woman gunslinger, Ellen (Sharon Stone), saunters into the town of Redemption, looking for revenge. The town's sadistic mayor Herod, played superbly by none other than Gene Hackman, is in the midst of organizing a quick-draw tournament. Hackman is always great in any movie he's in, especially as the villain. You'll also see a young Leonardo DiCaprio (Fee 'The Kid' Herod), just before he got his famous breakout role as 'Jack' in the 1997 blockbuster "Titanic". And a young Russell Crowe too. Sharon Stone became hugely popular in the 1990's, and she does an excellent job in this film as the lead heroine gunslinger. You may also recognize a younger Gary Sinise too, who plays Ellen's (Sharon Stone) father, as well as Lance Henrikson (Ace), who was famous for Bishop of "Aliens" fame. I inadvertently ordered two of these by mistake, but that's fine. They were not expensive, so I'll give one to a friend. Thanks Amazon!

GRAINY PICTURE but with ATMOS SOUND
CLASSIC ACTORS, Gene Hackman, Tobin Bell, Roberts Blossom, Keith David, Lance Henriksen, Pat Hingle, Mark Boone Junior, Woody Strode, and Bruce Campbell.ACTORS, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio (A VERY, VERY YOUNG), and Gary Sinise.A deadpan black comedy, Sam Raimi's fast-paced movie looks and sounds like a Leone oater but more so.Director Sam Raimi brings his trademark comic book-influenced visual panache to this post-modern Western. Sharon Stone stars as Ellen, a mysterious female gunslinger who arrives in the frontier hamlet of Redemption for a contest pitting quick-draw artists against each other. The event is the brainchild of Redemption's evil, corrupt mayor, Herod (Gene Hackman), a criminal who has taken over the town

Good movie, great 4k.
This movie may not be a totally serious western, but it's definitely entertaining, and the action is surprisingly suspenseful. Gene Hackman and Sharon Stone put up great performances, certainly better than one may expect in a Sam Raimi movie. Hackman seems to be doing an alternate take on Little Bill from Unforgiven, and I'm okay with that. The movie is full of famous faces, and everyone is great in it.The 4k presentation is terrific also. It's a pretty grainy movie, but it's an organic grain that makes it, along with the HDR, a very film-like presentation. This is what you want older movies to look like on 4k blu-ray. At least if you're me.

Classic movie with all the greats: Sharon Stone, ...
Classic movie with all the greats: Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Leo DiCaprio, Russel Crowe, Lance Henrikson, and many more. Over-the-top plot, characters and dialogue, but you revel in the movie's irreverence and humor.

This is my town! If you live to see the dawn, it's because I allow it. I'm in charge of everything
What I like about this movie is the contest and the rhythm provided by the shootings, of course John Herod is a villain that reminds me of Frank in ''Once Upon a Time in the West'' but Herod is perhaps even more cruel and ruthless. Ellen is a woman looking for revenge and at last she kills Herod with a little help from Cort, the Blind Boy and Dr. Wallace. The soundtrack is also interesting. One complaint: why the Sony people didn't include the sex scene between Ellen and Cort on the uhd 4k disc or on the bluray at least as an extra?

A Question of Viewer Expectations
After a recent viewing of this movie, I was surprised at the negative reaction to it of some viewers and critics. It is handsomely produced, with plentiful action, capable performances from the actors, a sprinkling of humor, and a sequence or two that almost reminded me of the Coen Brothers. It was hardly the greatest film I have seen, but I very much enjoyed the over-the-top way it re-visited a host of archetypal western conventions. Upon reflection, I think the negative reviews result from a problem I have seen many times before, with many other films. The whole thing comes down to what you were expecting when you first approached the film. The recent admirable film, "Appaloosa", with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortenson conveys a powerful sense of realism and the feel of a serious western drama. Films like "Cat Ballou" or "Blazing Saddles" take the western genre into the realm of outrageous comedy. "The Quick and the Dead" seems to me to deliberately go in neither of these directions. It might be viewed as a comedy, but I don't think that this was the director's intention, and the actual laugh-producing gags are not found here in abundance. In some ways, it reminds me of Eastwood's "High Plains Drifter", which is another film that does not ask to be taken too seriously; however, this one seems to be more deliberately flashy and extreme. Right from the opening scene, you are confronted with situations that can clearly not be seen as realism. One critic stated that he felt that Sharon Stone had not brought the desired amount of psychological depth to her portrayal. This strikes me as nonsense. This character, in the context of this movie, is not about psychological depth. She is deliberately a stone-faced stereotype of a gunslinger, with the somewhat incoherent quality of being too superstar beautiful for the part. This works like yet another tipoff that the viewer is not to be seeking realism but, instead, a sort of Hollywood send-up reality. In flashbacks, the Stone character might well be the 19th Century melodrama "Little Nell", victim of a dastardly villain, so cruel and vicious that you have no question as to the violent comeuppance they must inevitably face at the conclusion. It seems to me that some folks expected an out-and-out comedy, while others expected more realistic, serious action fare. The problem with this movie is that it is neither. You can accept this or not. I very much enjoyed it for what it is.

Quality release, but not the home cinema version :(
A classic movie from my childhood. Blu-ray transfer looks pretty good, sound and vision are both top notch and a definite improvement on the DVD release. It also contains all the special features that are on the DVD. Unfortunately this BR is the theatrical release and not the home cinema release, so it doesn't contain the love scene between Stone and Crowe. If you're looking for some HD boob action, you'll need to look elsewhere. Apart from that, a worthy purchase or upgrade.

BR Version
Always liked this film and decided to upgrade recently to BR. Much better picture quality so I am very pleased with purchase. It has Gene Hackman, Leonardo Dicaprio, Sharon Stone and a very slim and sexy Russell Crowe! Lots of gunfights and a good revenge western. What's not to like?

Casing in v. poor condition - see attached photographs
Although the CDs themselves seem in good condition, the cardboard case is in a very poor and ripped condition.I would have described this as 'usable' and certainly not in 'very good condition' as described.

Cannot spot Bruce Campbell!
Sharon Stone is slightly miscast but not bad enough that she spoilt the film. Gene Hackman is wonderfully villainous and there is great support from DiCaprio, Crowe and various cameos. I think all in all it works, Raimi may not have looked like the right director for a western but he pulls it off. I'm off to YouTube, see if anyone's posted the Bruce Campbell cameo.

Terrible Collective selection
Individually okay films but they don't go together as a triple bill. Desperado isn't a western per se; It's modern south of the border. Some lazy executive who probably never saw all these films did this and he or she ought to be fired. Silverado, Open Range, Appaloosa, . would have been a better selection for triple bill. As well as Once Upon A Time In The West High Plains Drifter, & The Quick & The Dead. El Mariachi, Desperado & Once Upon A Time In Mexico would have been a better triple bill to include the almost surreal Desperado.
