Digitally re-mastered and expanded edition of the classic self-titled 1972 album. South African born John Kongos had some success in his native country in the early 1960s before moving to Britain to further his career. He recorded his first album for Pye Records' newly formed Progressive label Dawn in 1970 before signing to Fly/Cube Records with whom he enjoyed two successful and highly creative hit singles 'He's Gonna Step on You Again' and 'Tokoloshe Man'. KONGOS was released in 1972 and was a UK chart hit. Produced by Gus Dudgeon, KONGOS featured a diversity of styles and experimentation and saw contributions from musicians such as Ray Cooper and Caleb Quaye. 'He's Gonna Step On You Again' was recorded by the Happy Mondays in 1990 as 'Step On' (a hit single), which brought Kongos' music to a new generation of followers. This release features nine bonus tracks (taken from his singles released by Fly/Cube Records), a booklet that fully restores the original album artwork and a new essay.

At last!
A friend and I heard He's Gonna Step On You Again in Spring 1971 and the radio announcer would never say who or what this song was. We both liked it but it wasn't until around 1998 that I re-discovered it on a compilation from Rhino, "Have A Nice Day" 70s series. I knew it right away and have always wanted to hear his work. The U.S. album only had 9 songs and now with this release it showcases 19 songs. The only other one that compares is Tokoloshe Man but the rest are worth hearing. He's Gonna Step has been covered by others such as Happy Mondays and Def Leppard. For an obscure artist it was great to hear this at last.

Tokoloshe Man is still great listening
My neighbor turned me on to John Kongos in the early 70's...and I still listen to his great album Tokoloshe Man. Great product, was delivered early and in great shape.

Dull and worthy Brit Pop of the early seventies
As a joost out of shorts into long trousers "He's Gonna Step On You Again' stirred the turgid depths of Top of the Pops-May 1971. Eee, and it seemed a good thing. But the album when it came did not have the same impact. And picking this up (with bonus tracks) on CD has confirmed it is well produced but forgettable pop. Even HGSOYA sounds wooden and duller than memory gave it. One for the fans and those on the look out for slick production and star session players (Rick Wakeman, Caleb Quaye, Ray Cooper, Lol Coxhill, Dave Glover and Ralph McTell).

Great nostalgic early 70s Rock
Thoroughly enjoyed reliving my late teens listening to John Kongos, again. The plastic case has a substantial crack in one of the faces, but this does not impact on the enjoyment of the music.

Real music!
Arrived early and plays really well for a record 48 years old, although the cover shows its age. I'd only heard the singles and decided to give the album a go. Glad I did. Strong songs and great musicians (Elton John's old band). Lyric sheet was included which was a pleasant surprise as inserts have a habit of going missing over the years. He should have been bigger! Songs range from folk to funk and never boring.

One of the best albums of all time ever.
Bloody amazing one of the best albums of 1971 / 1972. Great songs, great songwriter plus Elton's band and Elton's producer Gus Dudgeon. So if you like the EJ and Tumbleweed Connection albums you love this. Amazing production, amazing remaster , it explodes out of the speakers..Beatle-y also, it is simply killer.. Thanks very mucho to Esoteric and Fly for this welcome and brilliant collaboration. Damn, still rips my head off after 43 years of listening!!
