Konrad LorenzKing Solomon's Ring: New Light on Animal Ways

This is one my mom picked up in a used book store after dinner out one night, back in the 60’s, i was about 11. I read it about a dozen times as a kid, and again since, just a fascinating story of an animal lover. This later edition seems to be missing something, just can’t remember what it is. Maybe a picture? The Beta? Still, fantastic book.

Our dog trainer recommended this book and my son and mom read it right away. It's on my reading list. But, my son loved all that he learned and found his passion and interest in animals shared with Konrad Lorenz masterful way with words and putting a lot of history and knowledge into one book. Now, I have to read it, too. ;-) Look forward to reading it, that is. ;-D

A beautiful book whose wisdom and anecdotes will remain with you for decades (this was my third reread). Spend time with a truly civilized, witty man. It also has the most hilarious preface, in which he explains how he came to write the book.

I love this book. I was constantly looking up different species that the author brought up. Delightful.

I love his style of writing! The stories are written in a highly jovial tone. You can picture the shananigans right out of a movie. It is so so much fun to read.

Great book. Different insight to the animal and natural world.

This was probably one of the first serious natural history books I ever read, and many decades later it is still a delight. As one reviewer put it, it may now seem dated because so many of the ideas in it are now commonplace (but I still think it deserves more than the 3 stars that reviewer awarded it). So, 5 stars for content. However, one star deducted because the typeface used in this Meridian edition is dreadful and, for me, a pain to read: semi-bold and seemingly very cluttered on the page. It almost looks like a low-definition scan (I'm sure people who know printing have a term for this). It makes me wish my original copy hadn't been "borrowed" by someone...

Have know this book for many years and was looking for an English version to give to a friend. Was surprised that this edition has an additional chapter, compared to the German edition that I had read before...Book arrived on time and as described.

You can get a clear picture of just how dedicated Lorenz was to understanding animals, and just how groundbreaking his ideas were are are. This is definitely a classic in the study of animals.

I bought this for my partner out of nostalgia, as I'd owned and loved it as a child. It's still a lovely little book. The pen drawings are very dated, but all the more charming for that. The actual text is intriguing and the observations of animal behaviour stand up still today.
