It Depends On What You're Looking For From Rob Thomas
When I read the reviews on here I was hesitant to buy this album, although I've been a longtime Rob Thomas fan. I'm glad I didn't let the reviews that said this wasn't the real Rob Thomas put me off.Admittedly, when I heard the intro to the first song my eyebrows raised. But a few play-throughs of the album told me all I needed to know. This is my Rob Thomas. However he goes about it, he still does that thing that always gets me: that combination of witty, interesting and heartfelt, lyrics, stirring up the emotions with barely reigned in excitement with laid-back, oh-so-smooth hooks and harmony. That's what I'm looking for in a Rob Thomas album, and he delivers in The Great Unknown.

Get A Little Wild
Rob Thomas' "The Great Unknown" may be his best solo set ever. "I Think We'd Feel Good Together" blasts the set off with a throbbing quasi-rap chorus, "Maybe you can stay one night or stay forever." The single "Trust You" follows with another pulsing beat and ends with what sounds like a child's voice echoing the title, "I trust you!" "Wind It Up" continues the pop ambrosia with Victor Indrizzo's pounding drum sounding somewhere between ecstasy and the resulting headache. "One Shot" follows with high energy pop-rock, "Everybody want to get high again and play it all night long; Everybody get a little wild and then they turn and go back home." "Absence of Affection" is the romantic polar opposite of the opening track with its breakup lyric laced over classic rock rhythms, "In the absence of affection, you'll take anything and call it love." "NLYTM" (Not Like You Told Me) has one of those catchy melodies that gets stuck in your head -- Boom Boom Boom! "Heaven Help Me" is another track that has me reaching for the repeat button the changer, a bit more melodic, totally catchy. "Lie to Me" is a strong track casting Thomas as the guy desperately in love, "Just tell me anything; Girl, you can lie to me; I want to hear you sing or scream and cry to me." This is Thomas' best since his 2005 "Something To Be" solo shot. Don't miss it! Enjoy!

His best solo to date!
I saw Rob live in Chicago before this was released and was super stoked to hear the new songs. He played three off of this album and that was enough to get me interested. I actually bought the CD and popped it in. The first song is killer. His vocals are amazing and this is such a catchy song I cant get it out of my head. He obviously channels some MJ in there and his skills in doing so are evident. This is by far his best solo album and all of the songs are just well written and amazing. Some of the highlights are:1.) I Think We'd Feel Good Together - Catchy opener about sex, what can be wrong with this? Nothing!2.)Trust You - Great pop feel and you'll be hooked5.) One Shot - Another Catchy song that just gets you moving7.) Absence of Affection - At first I didn't like this but it grows on you. Its about someone that thinks they are so desired, yet no one else does9.) Paper Dolls - Haunting Sad song10.) NLYTM (Not Like You Told Me) - Seriously going to be stuck in your head11.) Pieces - Great vocal song......just greatOK...so I love metal and rock n roll....BUT I can deny the ability of Rob. He is amazing. Pick this up if you like pop music with REAL vocals, not auto tuning BS here.

Another Great CD
Another great CD by Rob Thomas. After hearing the first single, Trust You, I was kind of hesitant to buy the CD, I wasn't sure if I'd like it. The song is okay, but you can't really hear Rob's voice and the emotions he sings with in that song, it wasn't really him. Plus, the song didn't make much sense to me.Anyways, I preordered it, it got to me on time, and was AMAZING. It's a mix of different sounds, like his CDs tend to be, and they're all fantastic. And, fun fact, in concert, Rob explained that Trust You is not about a girlfriend, but about those friends who always convince you to go have a wild night out, just in case you were wondering.

Pieces and Paper Dolls are Masterpieces! Thomas shows his brilliant phrasing/timing on most songs
Two Masterpiece songs that give chills: Pieces and Paper Dolls. There are a few really good songs in addition to the perfect: Pieces and Paper Dolls, and then like nearly all CD's a few fluff pieces just to fill the album. One singy songy one is my least favorite. The CD is worth purchasing. It is nicely spaced out with the great songs worth waiting for. Rob Thomas has a great voice and it is used well in the songs, especially the 2 great ones. Also, excellent back ground female singer on Paper Dolls which really adds a European touch. Rob Thomas' phrasing and timing is unique and the CD shows that brilliance on several of the songs, but not all. The CD would get a 5 star if it weren't for the sing-songy one and a few fillers. My advice: Just record the excellent ones next time. That advice is to all recording artists.

Why can't a singer do something different?
This is a great CD. Yes it is different than what Rob has done in the past. I think he has an amazing voice and can sing whatever style of music he wants to sing. It is interesting that I like him much better as a solo artist than I do singing with Matchbox Twenty. Normally I like a singer with the band more than I like their solo work. I hadn't even known this CD was out until I happened to hear "Hold On Forever" on the radio. And I knew then he had a CD out that I just had to have. And, of course, I just know if Rob was turning out the same music all the time people would be complaining that all he does is the same thing over and over again!

Better than expected!
Having been a Matchbox Twenty fan since the early days, I was unsure what to expect from this album. I have read a number of reviews which are negative, mainly through comparing to his earlier work with Matchbox Twenty. I have to say, that although I agree it is different to that work - it stands up on it's own very well. It took me a couple of listens through, but it has grown on me enough to say I would recommend it in my first Amazon review!

Just keeps getting better!
Rob Thomas just keeps getting better! I think we'd feel good together, The great unknown and Paper dolls are standout tracks for me but there isn't a bad one on there, how many artists can do that these days? Definitely worth every penny x
