Hello, yes it will work fine as long as the card's power requirements are within the SD spec.

Q: Is there an adaptor available somewhere for the other way-- to plug a micro sd card into an sd slot?

Sure. I have one from Precision that goes from either micro SD or SD to standard USB - works fine. Sandisk also makes one from micro SD to SD. All are inexpensive. You can search in Amazon for micro SD to SD conversion for others.

Q: does this work with the kindle fire?

I don't have a Kindle Fire. I have a Lenovo Idea Pad with a micro socket and this adapter works perfectly.
