Fantastic steel book! As a huge fan of a game, I’m so glad they decided to create one for it. Beautiful artwork and an awesome 500 free Atoms for in game purchases. Highly recommended for any fan of the game.

No controller skin!
I bought this over other options for the controller skin, and was disappointed to not receive one, also did not receive the steelbook. Game looks good though, although the outer box was a little damaged.

Exactly what it said it was. Came with the Steelbook and was surprised to even see the controller cover came with it too!

Wastelanders was the face lift it needed
Fallout 76 have received a lot of justified criticism for the lack of content, bugs, and a few design choices at launch. Now with the Wastelands expansion, it actually feels like its much closer to a proper Fallout experience. You start off as one of the residents of Fallout 76, a vault that has now shutdown intentionally by the decisions of Vault-Tek years ago. You are part of the best and brightest and are let loose in Appalachia. There are of course the always benevolent Vault-Tek reasons for this, but I'll leave the lore for you to discover. So for full disclosure, I didn't play Fallout 76 prior to the Steam launch so I can't really speak for how the game was before other than watching some videos about some of the negative aspects of the game during its original launch about a year ago. However from what I've played, this game mostly addresses a lot of the problems I had with Fallout 4 with positive results. The Fallout 3 dialogue system is back, no more vague ideas of what you'll say with the unintended intent, conversations progress with no frustrations now. There is also a good amount of S.P.E.C.I.A.L. checks too if you've missed those. These happen often enough that chems now have a greater importance since you can leave the conversation, use a chem and chose your same choices to pass the check with no penalty.Speaking of consumables, they all come into play a lot more. You have to replenish your food and water meters periodically depending on how far you've traveled. If you include things like Nuka-Colas or the various brews you can make, it pushes you to actually take advantage of these items and plan if you are expecting a tough combat encounter. Magazines & bobbleheads work a little differently with magazines being a one-time use buff for a certain amount of time and bobbleheads doing the same but you'll get them back in your inventory after 24 hours.Weapons, armor pieces & power armor work exactly the same as Fallout 4 with the same item/scrap requirement system for building or repairing as needed. You'll need to keep in mind your ammo weight, these can really add to your weight limit and your stash capacity with Mini-Nukes and Fusion Cores being some of the most significant. Scrap in general is also more important, the map is massive with a lot of locations dotting the landscape so you're going to have combat encounters fairly often with potentially higher level enemies than you. These encounters can really wear down your armor fast so don't skip on repairs for very long.Building structures also make a lot more sense now since you now possess a C.A.M.P., allowing you to build your own personal campsite nearly anywhere. You have a build budget that dictates how much you can add in your space but you can build fairly elaborate structures if you have enough scrap. This is where you'll sleep, build & craft with you and your team/friends. Since you can stop here for free when fast traveling, finding a good location on the map that you'll know you'll be going often is important.Multiplayer works well, it doesn't take away from the single-player experience and most people just use the emote system. They will travel around like you on the server that you're on and you can choose to have them or you join a team and you can do missions together. Even if you want to do things solo, this can also be helpful since you can also fast travel to the other campsite for free as well as gain caps every time they complete a quest. You can also join others on the server in events that take place in the map to complete objectives and get items as a group. It's also a good way to travel if you want to get around paying caps to get to a nearby location. There is more to check out here but it's fun to experience it for yourself.Performance is actually better than Fallout 4, I've had very few crashes and the framerate has been stable during my playthrough. They even managed to fix that weird physics bug when you pick up an item, in other fallout games if you picked up a book from a shelf or a cup on a table, every other object in\on those furniture items would shake around a bunch. As for quests, there is a lot here. I've been playing them by myself and I still have a fair amount to do. If you want to see and do everything, you can easily get 60-80 hours or more out of this game. There is slightly more holotapes to listen as a part of some of the quests than I was expecting and while it's not a big deal, I can see where people were coming from if that's the only content they had in the past since there were no NPCs before the wastelanders expansion. The Atomic Shop is also worth going over if there are any worries of micro-transactions affecting the game. You can buy the currency for the shop if you want to, but you can easily earn it by playing the game. There is an Atomic Shop challenge menu that has objectives that change on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, so there is plenty of opportunity to get stuff on there for free. The items available are mostly cosmetic with a few items offering a few small perks to your C.A.M.P. should you choose to build/use them. I don't think it's a big deal at all and if nothing else, gives an incentive for Bethesda to provide extra stuff or content to the game.A minor thing that I've observed is that there isn't really any set piece moments with some of the quests, escorting Liberty Prime to the water purifier in Fallout 3 for example. It's a little disappointing but if they have to maintain a consistent game world for everyone, it's understandable. You might encounter some server connection lag spikes once and a while with the rare disconnect, not a big deal for me but YMMV.As a package, Fallout 76 is now a lot more in line with the past Fallout experiences that we know from Bethesda and even Obsidian in some cases. I'd say it could use another expansion to really make it something special but as is I do think it's still a lot of fun. Whether it's worth $40 depends on if you've enjoyed the prior titles or if you're expecting friends to join you on a playthrough.UPDATE:So an update on this review after over 100 hours playtime. The main quest is still fun, however you'll find that there is a very long-term grind for things you may or may not care about after you complete it. There is no narrative reason to engage in it and the only reasons I can think of to do so is that you're really into collecting items\plans or are gong for a specific end game build. PvP is non-existent so there isn't much motivation to create a build for that. There's also a lot of legacy grinding that's a slog as well. I still stand by this review, I think the main and most of the side quests are good and can be enjoyable to go through with friends or solo, but Bethesda clearly needs to add another expansion to make the endgame worth engaging with.
