Perfect, I know nothing about TDS meters, first one I ever owned. So I was a bit concerned about finding the time to read the directions and learn how to use it (with a toddler) . It took less than 5 minutes to read with very simple directions, no problem at all. I have used it to test silver, wonderful results. I also used it to test our filtered water and found that I need to replace our filter! Wasn't expecting that. I am very pleased and glad I purchased this tester.

My meter came very quickly. It has a step by step instructions inside and DOES NOT need to be calibrated. Although I purchased a ''TDS'' Meter and not a ''PH'' Meter like I had wanted, it is very accurate and still very useful in reading the ppm of my tap water. So with that being said, make sure you get the right meter. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is considering buy one. You will not be let down.

I bought this gauge on the recommendation of my plumber. I needed to filter the kitchen tap water and he recommended that I buy a water quality gauge to verify the resulting improvement in water quality. The gauge is easy to use and gives instant results. It did the job of verifying that my new filter did improve tap water quality.The gauge has built-in compensation for temperature. Therefore, it gives different water quality numbers for cold and ambient water. Cold numbers are smaller and smaller is healthier. Water quality is measured in terms of total amount of dissolved solids (TDS) in parts per million. I guess more minerals dissolve at ambient temperature?Some the gauge's measurements don't make sense, though. For instance, water filtered by the refrigerator filter sometimes measures higher than the tap water feeding it!

I just got this along with the calibration solutions for HMS (342 and 1000 ppm). At first it didn't turn on, but it was just that the battery was loose, so that was easy to fix. The initial reading in the 342 solution was 262, and it was 790 in the 1000 ppm solution (and 2 for distilled water). I did follow the guidance in the FAQ for getting good readings. I then went hunting for the hidden calibration screw and found the answer in the FAQ-- I had to cut a hole in the plastic face of the meter. Hmmm. If this meter is that far off on the first use, doesn't it suggest that factory calibration is not enough and the screw should be visible from the outset? (I know this is fixed in the model 2, but these old models are still for sale...) After I cut the hole in and tweaked the calibration, my readings were closer: 347/342 and 940/1000, which seems good enough. Distilled water still came in at 4. At that point, I was able to measure my RO water with some confidence-- it came in at 22 and my unfiltered water came in at 210. I liked the TDS scale on the FAQ for gauging my readings, so I'm good for now, but I'm giving it 3 out of 5 because of all the extra stuff I had to do. I'd definitely recommend getting the calibration solutions if you want greater confidence in your readings.

Just like another reviewer here- mine arrived with no packaging- just the meter and soft case with a sticker on the outside. Unlike another reviewer, I can't say there is an electrode missing, it's just that one electrode is very short (the one with the white silicone sealant).(I think I received the one that the other reviewer returned, looks identical as far as the sticker wrinkles in his photo.)The instructions are lousy, and the website refers mostly to a newer model (mine is the older model without calibration screw hole).I used it for checking my pool TDS and validated the factory calibration using distilled water. EDIT: The distilled water "zero" reading doesn't mean it is calibrated. I had the pool store test my water twice and this tool reads 400 PPM lower than the reading from the pool store. (631 vs 1100/1000) So does the manufacturer expect us to research where to drill the famous missing hole and also purchase the correct calibration solution ? I'm deducting one more star after finding out how far off this thing is. Although I am an environmentalist and hate to see excessive packaging waste- this should have been in a cardboard box, at least. The meter arrived in a amazon box with a couple of air bags thrown in, which did nothing to keep this meter from bouncing around.

Great bargain for the money. I use it as part of a suite of tests I do to make sure my construction project is in compliance with our SWP3 permits. You cannot calibrate it, and it cannot be submerged, but it is fast, cheap, and after a year of heavy use, still calibrates to 0 and reads true to a SpCon/TDS standard solution (both 50 ppm/100 uS range and 500 ppm/1000 uS range). I have used in temperatures ranging from 40 deg F to 110 deg F and still holds. Once I got water in the top, which got to the battery and electronics inside and it stopped working, but I stored it for 48 hours in dry rice to dry out completely and it fired right back up and has been fine ever since. I use it in storm drains, stream channels, diversion canals, and under all manner of weather conditions.

Works fine. No mention of a battery. What looks like a battery compartment is glued shut. I have not inquired about it yet. Concern is that when battery dies, the unit dies.

I planted Cherry tomatoes in my Aerogarden - had to raise the light when they got 3 1/2 ft. tall. I was concerned that they might not be getting enough nutrients so I bought this unit. First, it reads EC in microSiemens (uS) and most hydroponic charts are in milliSiemens (mS). You have to divide the reading by 1000 to compare it to the charts. My garden read 0594 uS or 0.594 mS. The charts call for 2.0 to 5.0 for tomatoes. Before I added nutrients, I wanted to check the meter. In distilled water it read 0008. I mixed 0.5 grams of table salt (iodized) with 500 ml of distilled water. In a lab this with lab quality components, this would be 2000 uS or 2.0 mS. The meter read 1736 uS, close enough for tomato gardening given the wide range. I can now add nutrients without fear of burning the roots. A nice piece of equipment for $15.
