Thorough, clear, well-written
This book was recommended to me by a recruiter for a Master of Public Health program. I can't thank him enough for suggesting it. The book is divided into three sections: (I) Introduction To Public Health, (II) Public Health Careers, and (III) The Future of Public Health. Part (I) is fairly brief, with an introduction to education and career pathways. Part (II) comprises the bulk of the book and is divided into 19 chapters that discuss the various fields within Public Health, including but not limited to: Infectious Disease, Public Safety, Education, Public Health Law, and NGO's. Each of these chapters includes a sampling of jobs in those fields, like Program Evaluator, Grant Writer, and Nutrition Consultant, etc. Each of the jobs presented includes a job description, required education and certification, core competencies and skills, compensation, workplaces, employment outlook, a list of further resources, and an interview with someone in that position. While the list of jobs included is thorough, it's obviously not exhaustive. However, I think the author, Beth Seltzer, does a great job of helping the reader explore the many diverse fields and careers under the public health umbrella. Seltzer does so in a way that helps the reader focus her attention and further research on careers and concentrations that match her goals and talents. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in a career in public health.

Excellent synthesis of the opportunities available in the public health field
As a recent college grad thinking about a career in medicine, public health, or some combination of both fields, it has been difficult to find a synthesis of the diverse array of opportunities within the public health field. This book does an excellent job of describing both the well-known and lesser-known career opportunities within the field, especially for those individuals like me who are thinking about training in both fields (the author in fact has both a medical degree and a masters of public health). The book is organized into the traditional public health sub-disciplines (e.g. epidemiology, environmental/occupational health, etc.), and it breaks down each career role in public health by providing a job description, education required, core competencies and skills, work environments, compensation, and job outlook. For many of these specific careers, it also contains interviews with public health practitioners that further clarify their day-to-day tasks, the rewards and frustrations, and the pathway that led them to their role. I am very glad I came across this book, as it has definitely provided greater clarity for the type of career I want to pursue.

All the public health careers ever imagined in this book!
I found this book very helpful and it showed every possible public health career under the sunand how to achieve it. I believe this book is useful for public health majors in undergrad or grad school. You get a sense of what to do if you get this book before graduating. I have used this book a lot before deciding a career in environmental health.

This book is very useful for getting a feel of what Public Health careers are out there. It gives a nice overview of the job, what schooling would be needed and the pay range. The book is divided up into sections so that you can easily find a career that matches your interests. I think this is a good book to look into before deciding on Public Health because it explains the possibilities out there. Good luck!

Greatly helpful
I'm considering a master's in public health as a post graduation option. However, I wanted to know more about the career options available, and this book was perfect for that. The information is organized well, and Ms. Selzter does a great job of highlighting all the different areas involved in public health.
