Q: how many gallons dose the tank hold?

This is the collector only. It is good for heating a 40-gallon water tank especially in warm areas.

Q: Is this for a "closed" system? Can I simply add it to my hot water system by way of a small pump and in turn my existing water heater becomes a tank?

This is for a closed loop system. It feeds into a solar water tank with heat exchangers. This means it will not work with your existing water heater (assuming your existing gas or electric tank).
