Compost All The Things!
3.5 stars. So, I have a confession to make. I'm always trying random new things and my husband often bears the burden of either maintaining or disposing of whatever I start. This time however, he put his foot down because I was like, "hey, I heard you can compost EVERYTHING with bokashi" by which I meant meat, dairy and dog poop. So for him to agree with this purchase, I do everything related to bokashi-ing (although he agreed I could finish it in our tumbler composter). These buckets make it easy to start bokashi composting. There's a filter in each bucket that prevents whatever you put in from sitting in the leachate and I assume prevents the spigot from clogging. The assembly instructions are fairly straightforward but possibly because I installed the spigot improperly or possibly because they're not the best fitting plastic parts, both my buckets leak a tiny bit. I just put them on two baking sheet trays from the dollar store. Voilà, problem solved. I didn't bother washing my bucket after dumping the contents into our tumbler and liquid is still draining out. Hopefully, that continues because I don't really want to reach in there, eww.The first batch is now finishing in the tumbler and is breaking down faster than it would otherwise but then again, the stuff did spend a couple weeks pickling in the bokashi bucket. I shall report back on the finished compost in the future.Tip: it is waaay cheaper to make your own bokashi flakes once you finish the starter bag and I believe that being generous with the bokashi ensured that the "good" white mold won the battle (vs black/green mold) in my buckets. Also, I was inspired to bring home (on the subway) a pumpkin from the office to add to the compost and it surprisingly only took up maybe 1/4 of the bucket after I chopped it up.
