The Best Italian-American film ever!
food, personalities, family, religion, food, Brooklyn, marriage, funerals, relationships, food. Dom delouse, Candice, Anne Bancroft. a small budget film with a director and actors who know what they are doing, making the most of lighting, location and the story they are conveying. This is one of my top films and one that I can watch over and over. when I want to introduce acquaintances to the Italian American persona I have a movie night with this movie and It always works out great. read the longer reviews and what people say, this is what its like to be Italian American( or what it was maybe). Dom performance is on top and this may be one of his best ever. an incredible ahead-of-its-time comedy that focuses on everything from sadness and cultural isolation to the weight-loss movement and sad loss of self-worth. with all the times I have watched this film I still get something new from it every time. I would love to see a top notch treatment of this DVD with plenty of extras, the possibilities of course would be endless.

Mangia tutti
What a wonderful and profoundly underrated film. People can keep their trigger warnings and their safe spaces, take a look at this movie to truly see what it is like to accept others for their foibles and perceived ills. Dom DeLuise (whose mother’s family shares my last name) and Anne Bancroft are superb. The film is hilarious, sorrowful and absolutely stellar.

Laugh-out-loud funny!
I probably first saw this when it came out and have enjoyed it even since. All of the characters are so funny and if you and/or anyone you know has gone thru trying to lose weight then it will be even funnier because you will remember thinking these things or seeing/hearing other people express these thoughts/actions. And in the beginning when they go to the funeral of a family friend and the casket it gigantic (because the cousin was obese) it was hilarious. Loved it!

If You Want to Know What It's Like to Be Italian, Watch This Movie
'Fatso' is unquestionably the most Italian movie out there. What I mean is that when you watch this movie, you experience the many ways that Italians live, love, interact with family, and take part in the world. There are so many parallels to real Italians it's uncanny. Some examples:- The opening funeral scene with Dom's cousin Salvatore (just the names are enough!!)- The way in which food is used to calm down Dom as a young boy, and how he uses it to calm himself down as an adult- The family's life in New York- The relationship between Dom, his brother Frankie, and his sister AntoinetteThe movie is funny, sad, heartwarming, and so many other emotions. The performances are outstanding. First, there's the late great Dom Deluise playing a character which is, essentially, himself. He is so realistic you feel you are truly watching Dominic DiNapoli and not the actor who is portraying him. Then there's Ron Carey, who plays Dom's younger brother Frankie. Carey does such a good job that you really think the two are brothers in real life. Finally, there's the acting genius of the late Anne Bancroft. She plays sister Antoinette to a 'T' in so many ways. I especially was touched by how she showed both anger and love towards her brother and how her ranting and raving are such a memorable part of the movie.Besides the 'Italian angle', there are so many other great things in this movie, including the Chubby Checkers (hysterical), 'get the honey junior', the 'candle snuffer outer', and the romance between Dom and Lydia. It just goes on and on!This is such a great movie in so many ways, you have to see it. It may have not made too much of a splash when it was out, but it's surely one of the best, most realistic movies ever. It's a favorite of mine and hopefully will become a favorite of yours.

Was not comical like I thought it would be.
I would have to say that someone else may find this movie more enjoyable than I did. I did not even finish it, as it was sad, and scarry for anyone out there that may be overweight as he was. And, maybe that was the idea of it, to help people want to get more healthy. But I for one was looking forward to a comical funny movie because of the star, and I wasn't laughing so I stopped watching it. I may have enjoyed it more had I watched it to the end. Actually I am not a good one to be giving a review on this movie since I didn't watch the whole of it.

this movie will make you laugh and is also a little sad in a way
such a rare classic. this movie will make you laugh and is also a little sad in a way, but has a happy ending. I love this movie because it is well directed(by Anne Bancroft), who also stars as Dom Deluise's sister in the movie. overall such an underrated and rare classic

This is my favorite cult movie.
Don't know if others consider this a cult movie. But it should be right up there with Rocky Horror Picture Show or Ferris Buehler's Day Off! Especially if you've ever struggled with weight loss. I love this movie and was so glad to find it to purchase. Dom Deloise plays the perfect victim to the temptations of both food and an attractive love interest. And the role of that love interest is played very sweetly. This is a funny movie not only about struggling to lose weight, but about the interactions within this Italian family. Recommend it.

Heartwarming gem
We can disregard Maltin on this one. This film is a true modern classic in which a man battles the temptation of food. He is a wonderful guy, outgoing, charming, warm, fat, who adores food. The scene in which he is being told by the dietician the many, many items that he cannot eat has me still laughing -- the tragic look on the poor fellow's face becomes sadder and sadder as she rattles off the long list of delicious, but forbidden delicacies. When Dom goes beserk in the night and threatens his baby brother with a knife to get the key to the food cabinet, the brother calls his dieters group "Chubby Checkers" for help. These two enormous checkers rush over and proceed to talk about food, the things they love: "have you ever sucked out the jelly in a jelly donut and filled it with chocolate chip ice cream?" Needless to say, what follows is a riot, both of food and comedy.Highly recommended if you have a warm heart and maybe a less than perfect body.
