Complete Works for Piano Solo

Magical recording of Mozart keyboard works, performed on the fortepiano.
Absolutely fabulous. Who thought the fortepiano could be thrilling? Honestly, I have other "regrettable" fortepiano performances--whole sets in fact. Hearing this traversal emboldens me to revisit them. Maybe I had them all wrong? The fortepiano can sound inexpressive and academic. But here, nothing could be further from the truth. Although Brautigam is capable of fleetness, what wins the day here is his emphatic, passionate playing. This is such a WOW recording that I can recommend it to you without reservation. It carries you away like some kind of time machine, invoking nostalgia for an era you could not possibly have experienced. These 10 discs--yours for only about $7 each here--are a phenomenal deal, if you want this huge a dose of Mozart keyboard compositions, some of which will be familiar, some quite obscure. These performances were highly recommended by the critics when originally released, and are very nicely recorded. Great listening, magical in fact.UPDATE: Here's a comment that might strike some as strange. I have a wonderful system in my living room, and in my bedroom one that's really pretty good. This does not sound so good when played through the latter system. A great deal of the sonic dimension the fortepiano can generate gets "flattened" into something that merely sounds like a harpsichord, instead of the "everything-piano" you hear in Brautigam's hands. I mention this in case you've got what Alex in A Clockwork Orange famously described as a "portable picnic player." If so, buy one of the many excellent versions for modern piano instead.

Mozart's Sonatas and Variations as Intended to be Played!
I own other "recommended" sets of Mozart's sonatas from some famous performers. Their interpretations are, indeed, fine. But, placed alongside Brautigam, they are surpassed! Just, on occasion, his competition leaves you with feelings of repetition and boredom. That leads one to think that Mozart's piano sonatas may not represent his best compositions, and it may leave you wanting to try something else. But, Brautingam puts an end to that unwise thinking the moment you put the disk in the cd player. Mozart's sound world instantly comes to life in your ears. Brautigam's playing is superb as he works his way through the emotional twists and turns of the sonatas and variations, taking refreshing changes of pace with each new piece. He seems to recreate, and to make you think, that you are back in time and listening to Mozart himself play, not to mention make you think that you want to stay for a while. HIs choice of piano for this music is indisputable. A remarkable instrument. You will find yourself enveloped by Mozart's compositions which are endlessly creative and refreshingly satisfying. Please do not hesitate to buy the set, as it will be an investment in your emotional good health. Classical music at its finest!

The Best Mozart Set Ever
It hardly needs saying, since everyone already knows. Brautigam is the man. If you like Mozart's piano music, then you must have this set. This is the one you want if you can have only one. It would be worth it even at a higher price. But when you look at the price for all the CDs you are getting, it is also an incredibly good deal. BIS label recordings always have superb engineering too. This is desert island material. You cannot go wrong.

Wonderful performances spoiled only by the performer's refusal to add ...
Wonderful performances spoiled only by the performer's refusal to add embellishments to most of the repeated sections, of which he takes all of them. Beautiful sounding fortepiano. My copy was spoiled by some annoying "clicks and pops" throughout the set.

but I feel with all his BIS recordings the sound is just bad - microphone too close to the instrument
"Flattening" . . . I don't know . . . blame it on my sound system,if you will, but I feel with all his BIS recordings the sound is just bad - microphone too close to the instrument, or something. Painful listening! I would recommend Paul Badura-Skoda on Astree, every time, a much more rewarding experience, as far as I was concerned. This is no direct criticism of Ronald Brautigam or his playing.
