Good, exhaustive biography
Other reviewers have touched upon how thorough and objective this biography is and I concur. It is very well written and gives us a lucid view of the disturbing and fascinating life of Hemingway. The guy was brute, no doubt and could never been at peace. My only disappointment was that it ends abruptly with his suicide. I would have liked a little afterward for better resolution. Also, he doesn't mention much about the acrimonious relationships he had with his sons, which is not surprising since all three of them were pretty much thrown under the bus by both sets of parents. The sons paid a strong price, considering how all three turned out to be fairly disturbed individuals like their father. In short, I highly recommend this biography as a good source, but I am look forward to reading other sources just to get more than one perspective. One short aside, my next bio is by Hotchner and I noticed that Baker a couple of times denigrates this author as being completely snowed by Hemingway so I'll be interested to see what quality that biography is, whether Baker was trying to warn the reader or simply discredit Hotchner.

Old paperbacks
I'm almost positive that the description absolutely fit the condition of the book. It just brings back home the feel of a really old paperback. This book is 487 pgs. printed in the 80's. It contains many photographs dating from: 1899-1959. It is in good shape, still bound and readable. Surprising how small the print is! All-in-all the book is in great shape for it's age.I'll try to find an affordable hard copy of this book at some point.

Very Readable
I'm not a reader of Hemingway's work but became interested in him when I read The Paris Wife about Hadley Richardson his first wife but do love some of his short stories I've read in anthologies. This is a large book and so far I happy with the details it fills in before and after Hadley and up until his death. It paints a clear picture of the events and times that shaped Hemingway's perspective and ultimately his writing. The book reads well and I'm almost finished and already am wishing there were more photos included.

Best Bio of Papa
Best bio on Papa, although possibly a “little” biased. I’d still read this and chuck any others.

' Ernest Hemingway A Life Well Lived'
HelloThis is the best biography of Ernest Hemingway. Though many years old now the book isresearched to a professional level. Carlos Baker has gone into detail about Hemingwayslife. The relationship's with other writers such as Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound and GetrudeStein are fascinating. The conflicts Hemingway had with his family, in particular his motherwere sometimes callous. But his childhood in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago were to mouldErnest into the greatest American writer of the 20th century. This and his journalism prior tohis time spent in Italy during the first world war and in particular the times spent in Paris in the 1920s.A Paris that gave him the encouragement and confidence from such eminent authors as James Joyce,Pound and Stein. The bleakness of Hemingway's final years spent in Ketchum, Idaho are heart breaking to read. For sucha wonderful writer and man who was so full of life and energy to be struck down with the destructive depressionshe finally was are cruel, Ernest Hemingway by Carlos Baker is a must for anyone interested in the great man. Either in his enduringnovels and short stories or his colourful life.

Fantastic book, transaction, service, shipping, delivery etc.....this 1st edition Hardcover circa 1969 was far beyond my expectations...in absolutely almost perfect condition, dustcover et all,... the book is the best bio of "Hem" in my estimation.I have in been in Havana at "Hems" haunts, "Papa Dobles" Daiquiris at the Floridita, the Ambos Mundos Hotel, Terrazo de Cojimar with Gregorio Fuentes, (Truly, the model for "the Old Man and the Sea') where we spoke for three hours and enjoyed Tabaco, Cafe', whisky , rum and stories of "Hem."' the stream, the Pilar.....also visits to the Finca, where the descriptions of EM's life come to visualization in three dimensions,I have the paperback, and have read same, so the 2nd time reading will be even better...."Hem" lived 7 lives while normal men were living One.Paul Herriott
