"Pop Art" by Tilman Osterwold
This is a really good book! Not only is it a great over view and introduction to the origins and pioneers of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, but it covers the philosophies of what Pop Art is all about, which is something most art historians don't delve into too deeply. As this books puts it, Pop art is about "the myths of everyday life". Centuries ago artists painted images of Greek Goddesses, but Pop Artists painted images of Marilyn Monroe, and many artist have painted "bowls of fruits", pop artists paint "cans of soup". Whether it's images of movie stars or corporate logos, Pop art is about focusing your attention on all the things that effect and shape modern society. My only complaint is that this book was published in 1990, an expanded edition probably wouldn't be a bad idea, because over the passed 40 years the Pop art philosophy has become one of the most dominate forces in modern art. But if your someone who's interested in understanding what goes on in art galleries of today, this book is an excellent guide and a "must read".

Good book.
There are lots of pictures and lots of contents. I wish I had more pictures or pictures. Is too much text flawed?

Beautiful on the coffee table!
While no art history "gem", it is beautiful and informative. I am really enjoying it and others seem to gravitate to the cover! Loving it!!

Book was not the cover advertised, I specifically though I was ordering the cover with Marilyn Monroe and it was a completely different cover.

Art Lover
I saw my granddaughter (16) gazing at this book in Waterstones and it reminded me of my late discovery of modern art. I made a note of the book title and stored it away awaiting her birthday. I can only review my delight over this book as her birthday isn't until April 5 but I'm hoping that this book will open up and deepen her interest in art . . . . I'm sure the potential is there and this could be a catalyst?!

I got the fuzzy end of the lollypop!
I was disappointed that when it arrived, as it didn't have a Marilyn cover, as shown. I'd specifically wanted the Marilyn cover and it was a present, so was very disappointed. However it arrived promptly and the supplier was more than helpful trying to source me the cover I was after, so can't fault them. Otherwise, it's an excellent Pop Art book.

All the greats are here.
All the greats of Pop Art are represented here: Warhol, Lichtenstein, Blake, Keinholz, and Rauschenberg. The Pop Art movement was one that tried not to take itself too seriously, and that sense of fun is very evident here.Interesting and informative text,as well as large and clear reproductions of the icons of Pop,make this an excellent starting point on the subject. Highly recommended.
