The material is silicon, which is much nicer than pvc plastic or rubber. It is soft, flexible and shiny

Q: These mats come with a definite chemical smell. I’ve washed them once and it is still there. Does it eventually go away? How have people handled this?

I may not be much help, but I really did not note a chemical odor and I do have a pretty sensitive nose.we have been using the mat under our kitchen coffee maker and have had wonderful success with it.- water previously building up on our counter is much improved.
