Gregory HInes as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson
If you are a tap dancer, or if you enjoy tap dance, you will just love this movie. It should be in every tap dancer's collection. "Bojangles" tells the story of the great tap dance star, Bill Robinson, whose career spanned most of the first half of the 20th Century. He was hugely popular in vaudeville and achieved world-wide fame as a movie star in the 1930's and '40s, when black artists rarely had access to such success. He was widely considered to be the finest tap dancer of his generation. He was especially noted for his clear, meticulously executed rhythm dances. Bill Robinson influenced every tap dancer who saw his work and was known for his generosity in creating opportunity for talented young dancers all over the country. He was a great entertainer and a very generous man who was so loved and respected in Harlem that he was named Honorary Mayor. When he died in 1949, more than a million people lined the streets of New York to pay homage. Robinson's film work is excellent, particularly Stormy Weather, in which he played opposite the great Lena Horne. And his film performances as Shirley Temple's partner are classics.Gregory Hines, a gifted tap dancer, actor and singer is quite wonderful as Bill Robinson. No other dancer/actor could have done this role, as Hines was rightly considered to be the finest tap dancer of his generation. The film turns out to be a tribute to both artists. I am grateful to have this film as a fitting remembrance to both of them.Bravo.

My Uncle's Story
It's interesting to see how a relative might be depicted. Bill Robinson was married to a great Aunt on my father's side. I used to see his picture at my Grandmother's house as a kid. When I returned to St. Louis in 1983 to do radio at KATZ AM I spoke of him on the air one night and got a phone call from a lady named Flossie who said she'd danced with Bojangles. We met up a small bar near Thomas St. and Page Boulevard and drank a beer. Later in life I had the honor to play John Fielding, a jazz singer in the Alphonso Trent Orchestra of Gold Band. A portion of it can be found on YouTube. I'm Ryk St. Vincent.

A Must See for Lovers of Gregory Hines & Dance
If you love dance and Gregory Hines you should see this movie. The script & diaglogue aren't the greatest but the dancing is wonderful. Gregory Hines was one of the most talented actors of his generation as well as being a great dancer. He was seldom given the opportunity to showcase his acting ability and he does a great job of portraying Robinson. The script is weak and it suffers from poor production values. It would take a miniseries or a three hour movie to do justice to Bojangle's life but this movie is a decent start.

Good Acting From All !
I watched the movie for historical purposes. It portrayed Mr. Bojangles as a man who was challenged by his birth race and the factors that follow not being "accepted" as the individual of God-given talent. . Mr. Hines' portrayal was convincing, Bravo! Ms Elise, her usual self, gentle and serious, took me into the world of a woman's heart and mind for a man that is loved. Don't overlook the brief appearance of the Grandmother character. Younger William could have definitely been a real challenge for her and wished that she could have beat "behavior' into him or shake it out of him.The imovie s a fantastic segue to read up on this important figure..

Movie Did More for Hines Than Robinson
Bill “Bojangles” Robinson was one of the most well-known tap dancers of the early 20th century; Gregory Hines was one of the most popular tap dancers of the late 20th century. In makes sense that Gregory was tapped (pun intended) to portray Robinson in a bio-pic. Hines was a capable actor and delivered many scenes with authenticity and emotion. Even so, without knowing any of Robinson’s background, we are to accept from the movie that he was a gambler, drinker, and womanizer. He may have been, but the causes are not portrayed and provide little insight as to why he was this way. It’s a challenge to reconcile this character portrayal with the affable public image that we know. This was a good vehicle for Hines, and in my opinion did more for his legacy than Robinson’s.
