Excellent study of Ship decoration
Well-researched and well-written source on ship decoration that updates and mostly supercedes the earlier classics of the subject, written in the 1920s. Highly recommended. It is an outstanding source for the subject and one of the few that offers comparative study of different decorative traditions, including the very rarely mentioned Scandinavian maritime powers. This book is not and never was intended to be a step-by-step carver's textbook. The other reviewer has clearly missed entirely the point of the book, had purchased it without reading the description.

More History than Practicality
Certainly well researched and well written history of both ship carving and the Navys of the Old World. For the woodcarver or would-be shipcarver, this was of little practical application. The history, whys and wherefores, were enlightening, yet difficult to apply to hands-on carving and design. For the price, I cannot recommend it, other than as a historical treatment of the topic. Many other how-to books out there that would be much more useful, and significantly cheaper.

A true masterpiece !
No surprise the last book on the subject goes back to one century ago. Writing such a book requires a unique lifetime expertise on the subject. But it goes far beyond ship decoration : it is also a contribution (partial, of course) to the history of maritime commerce of the period, and of European ships fleets. A true masterpiece !

interesting study on the subject although incomplete
interesting study on the subject although incomplete. To bad it doesn't includes the study on the portuguese and spanish comercial companies, much more important than many of those studied here, as also the decoration on those countries ships. It should change the misleading title to Ship Decoration in Northern Europe navy's.
