Get this kit and you will have a great time!
Get this kit! Since I was a little boy I have heard about making fire by "rubbing two sticks together." Well, you can! This kit has everything you need. The wood you use is important. Here in Florida we have loads of pine trees, but pine is not a good choice for starting a fire this way. A lot of people recommend cottonwood, but that doesn't grow around here. But this kit comes with cottonwood parts for the friction. The bow is nicely made and the cordage is already set to exactly the right tension. The jute is perfect for building your "bird's nest" to dump your ember into. So you WILL succeed in getting actual flame from this kit. Now that I have confidence in my technique (they have great videos on their website to show you, and Youtube has tons of helpful videos too), my plan is to start substitution local materials, like different woods, and cordage. And when the technique no longer works, I will know the problem is with whatever new item of the kit I have just substituted, and can make a change, but I won't think that the problem is me. BTW this company stands behind its product. I ordered a second kit for a friend, but there was a slight flaw in one of the parts that prevented it from working well. I called the company and they immediately shipped out a replace part which I received later that same week. Once you get your first flame, you will have (as one guy warned online) a grin on your face you will not be able to get rid of for over an hour!

Makes a good father and son activity
Great product for 1st timers like myself. I have used this to get the basics down and have successfully used 5+ times. If you really want to get good with the bow and drill method use this kit to get the basics down and MAKE SURE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. A small coal is all you need to get a fire going and this kit makes it easy. Makes a good father and son activity. After a few times you feel like using matches is pointless.

This is a great starter kit to get you going on friction fire ...
This is a great starter kit to get you going on friction fire building and build your confidence. I'm not sure what wood they use for the spindle and fire board, but I find it gets an ember going a little easier than the Virginia Red Cedar that I get out of the woods. A great gift for anyone who might have an interest in survival stuff. One thing I did notice on the kit is that the pre cut notch in the fire board is just a simple wedge shape. The ideal cut would be a wedge that widens like a funnel as it goes towards the ground. This allows for better air flow for the ember.

this is perfect. Started an amber in less than 30 seconds
I ordered this item to teach a High School Survival Course the Bow Drill fire starter technique works. Obviously going into the woods, selecting your own wood and building the kit from scratch would be optimum, but to help explain the concept of the Bow Drill and how it works, this is perfect. Started an amber in less than 30 seconds. String comes already tied and looped on the bow with correct tension, in-turn shows students how tight/loose the cord needs to be to spin spindle and not slip. Excellent product for teaching and demonstrations.

This kit makes it wayyy easy.
This kit works great. I got a good ember on first attempt, but did not have a good nest. Second attempt yielded fire! I wish there was wood with a similar composition to the plank that comes with this kit in my area, it made all the difference. The twine for building nest will last forever, but I don't think the plank will last more than three or four more fires before I need to make a new slot.

This is a bit bigger than I imagined but it ...
This is a bit bigger than I imagined but it is also much more substantial. I have always wanted to do this and I'm sure that I could scavenge these materials but this would be the end result I'd be looking to produce.

Love this kit!
Excellent kit to use when you're starting out! It's super easy to make a coal in a matter of less than a minute, as long as you have the right method down. One thing I think worth mentioning is that you need to have the rope quite tight on the bow... actually tighter than you think. It really needs to grip the stick tightly in order to spin it well enough to create the needed friction. Also, this kit is worth it just for the hand-held, which you can still use when you want to try making your own bow and drill. And the feeling you get when you make that first coal and start a fire... priceless!
