Tekonsha50-85-325 Shur-Set III Breakaway System with LED Test Meter, Battery, Switch and Charger

This is a great little unit and the price is fantastic. I always check amazon before shopping local and I'm glad I did in this case.So, this is almost a 4.5 star because the break away pin has a plastic head where the cable connects. The rest of the pin needs to be plastic so as to not close a normally open circuit but I've seen this done where the head is a metal eyelet. I was nervous I was going to break the plastic head when I pulled the cable as it's a pretty snug fit however it did finally pop out without breaking anything. Therefore, until proven otherwise I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt.The instructions were very good but error on the side of too much information. If you're planning on installing one of these you're probably smart enough to figure them out.Out of the box the battery needed charging so I went ahead and did this while I installed the rest of the assembly and wiring. I soldered every connection and highly recommend doing it this way and you'll have time while you wait for the battery to charge.After the install I tested the system with the pin out and everything worked great. On gravel with any empty trailer both axles locked up within a few feet of tugging. A week after install I checked the battery and it still has a full charge. I love the easy check button on theach housing.

I read all the reviews before I purchased this item. And I believe those who had a problem is because they left the old charger that went to the previous charging system. I found mine was hidden under the frame.My unit works perfectly. You can press the test button. When startying my truck, power is now supplied to my trailer and battery break away. The amber will come on and shut off automatically when unit is fully charged. I changed too this unit cause the old style system showed nothing on battery status. If their ever was a problem, now I don't worry cause now my battery is fully charged.

Installed this on a couple trailers. Installation was pretty simple. We had another brand of breakaway on there before and it kind of made the installation a little more difficult so i just cut all the all the trailer cables off and put a new 4' section of trailer cable on there to clean up the whole mess... Everything works perfect on it. The light turn on when it's charging from the truck, you can press the button and see if it needs to be charged and pulling the breakaway switch locked up the brakes! I bought 3 and i'll be buying more to replace the older ones on some of my other trailers..

Great product. Does the job, but buyer beware: No hardware is included in the package. It's one of those little things that could be included but will require a trip to the hardware store to complete the job. Dropping a star because $1 worth of stainless nuts/bolts/screws wouldn't have been that much trouble to include to save an extra trip!

This product was well thought through. The battery comes installed inside the mounting box.So, even though the picture shows three pieces, it comes with only two things to install. The battery box has an LED readout that shows if the battery is charging. Also, you can press a button and the LED will indicate if the battery is charged. When you plug your trailer into your tow vehicle the battery gets charged automatically. You have to plug your trailer into a tow vehicle every six months to keep the battery charged. Battery is supposed to last five years.

I installed this system to replace the factory one on my 2020 triaxle boat trailer. It was a poor quality kit that came on a high end trailer and even worse install...The installation of this new one was as easy as it was going to get with a system like this. I'm real happy with how it turned out and the fact that it will charge the break away battery now.

I purchased this to replace an 8 year old plastic battery break-away box that became brittle with age. This new Tekonsha unit is very sturdy and well built, I especially like the side mounting bracket it is really beefy. The LED indicator lights are bright enough to be seen in bright sunlight and the charger function charged the battery from the tow vehicle with no problem. The leads on the break-away switch were long enough that I did not have to splice in extra wire and that was appreciated. I suggest that all wiring on a trailer exposed to the weather be connected with crimp-on fittings that have hot-melt heat shrink sleeves. They cost more but are worth it, the wires will not corrode inside the fitting. I am happy with this product and recommend it.

Only have used once since installation, and did not have a need for the battery backup. That said, I intentionally "disconnected" the trailer and the brakes did indeed lock and would have stopped the trailer in-place in an emergency. It should go w/o saying that the battery needs to be kept charged. I use a small trickle charger that is designed for use on seldom-used vehicles and boats.

Just replaced an old breakaway system that got damaged with this one. Arrived promptly in good condition and was easy to mount. The quality appears very good. The wiring instructions are a bit confusing and could be much better, luckily it was very similar to my old one so I was able to figure it out based on the way the prior one was wired and it worked appropriately one the first test.

I have used a few Tekonsha products in the past, brake controllers and the like, and this was a no-brainer purchase when we were upgrading our car hauler. I had tied our old broken breakaway unit into a winch battery as a stop gap, but didnt like thought of losing power in an emergency. This unit is well worth the small premium of others as it will self charge with the feed wire off a 7 pin harness. With the cost of separate chargers for other brands, this is nice and tidy in 1 package "1 extra wire" sorta way. i recommend a light coat of dielectric grease on the pull pin, its tough to pull out for a reason, but being all plastic, a little help goes a long way. 10/10, if you need a BA unit, you will be happy for years to come.
