Still waiting for support 48h after my first message. it doesn't work (mac or rpi4). tried all the instructions on wiki. what do i do? return it?

Can the controller board be removed from the back and re-attached with a ribbon cable that way the display can lie flat on my project?

Seller answer is only HALF true. The PCB board requires *two* ribbon cables. One is a simple standard ribbon cable found on all these LCD screens. The other is a specialized cable that has ICs on it and CANNOT BE EXTENDED.

When connected to a pi 3 or pi 4, does the pi power the display or does both the pi and the display need their own power supply?

The screen is powered by what they list as the "touch port" in the photos. So if you plug the pi 4b usb port into the touch port on the screen, it will receive power using the Raspberry pi's power. I would suggest using an official Raspberry Pi power adapter, or at least one with higher than a 2.5a power rating. If you do not want to use the touch screen, then I believe you would have to have a separate power adapter to power the screen independantly. I have tested this on a RPi 4B.
