If you enjoy chess you will enjoy and appreciate this Scandinavian predecessor. The Hnefatafl [neff-aah-tah-full] Tournament Set with Neversummerchalet rules© is an excellent learning tool to prepare younger players for the abstract strategic thinking necessary to excel at classic chess. It is also great fun for people who like the idea and challenge of playing a chess “like” game but haven’t the time or inclination to learn all the associated moves and rules. NeversummerchaletTM rules© are very simple with all pieces having the same move but the game is much more! Like classic chess - as the game is mastered, individuals develop skills and strategies which evolve into deep, complex, and advanced enjoyment. Best of all the learning curve is much shorter than classic chess and victory being based on points for captures and “wins” adds to the enjoyment for players at every level. Your new Hnefatafl game is actually made with my hands. Each piece cast in resin, painted, then flocked and finished individually. Just as the original board was individually masked three times, painted with four different colors then carefully reproduced on ¼” thick PVC tile and finally felted. Being hand crafted no two games are exactly alike and have what I like to refer to as “charming irregularities” that give “real” things character and personality. A good fictional example of this game would be when King Théoden evacuated Edoras to Helms Deep after Rohan was invaded by Saruman in Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers by J.R.R.Tolkein. Includes: Neversummer Chalet Rule booklet and instructional DVD Numbered and dated 11.75 x 11.75 hand painted board reproduced on a ¼” thick Black PVC tile with a brown felt covered bottom and four corner felt pads Ready to giftwrap 12”x 12” x 2” black game box 36 hand finished soldiers and 1 king – all cast in resin with green flocked bases Soldier pieces approx 1.5” tall - king piece approx 2.25” tall

Somewhat imperfect but still best Hnefatafl on Amazon
I am giving 4 stars despite some caveats because Neversummer Chalet should be commended for striving to create a high quality Hnefatafl set. This is miles better than the crafty junk you see elsewhere on the Internet (a pile of polished rocks and a painted slab of wood). But in fairness, it is not THAT much better than the commercial "Viking Game" set, which (once you find a website that sells it!) is about 1/3 the price. Both have attractive resin pieces and both use a full 11x11 board (read Damian Walker's "Reconstructing Hnefatafl" -- available on Amazon -- to see why using a 9x9 board significantly alters gameplay). The difference: the cheaper set uses Isle of Lewis INSPIRED pieces and a canvas board. This set uses Isle of Lewis REPRODUCTION pieces and a PVC board with a stone-like appearance. Slight advantage to Neversummer Chalet. I am not bothered by the board as some reviewers were... But if I had my druthers I would have liked a better storage case (the cardboard cartoon is functional but unattractive) and I would have suggested a slightly different set of pieces. Considering the Lewis pieces are supplied by Studio Anne Carlton (who create numerous Lewis replicas) I would have appreciated a greater mix of "warders" (as the ancient soldier figurines are usually called) or at the very least a difference between the attackers and defenders (other than the color of the resin).

Wonderful Beautiful Game
This set is beautiful. I love pulling it out of the box and just looking at the intracacy of all the pieces. Game play is fast, usually we finish a game in about 15 minutes. Its super easy to teach. I recommend this for anyone looking for an alternative to chess. This is one of the few games I can get my wife to play so kudos to Neversummer Chalet for creating work of art.

Amazing Game
This board and the pieces are just remarkable and I could not have been more happy with this purchase.I recently discovered Tafl and got addicted immediately and have been trying desperately to get others playing it ever since. There's a ton of strategy and I love the fact that each side has a totally different objective thus your whole thought process and strategies change depending on which side you're playing. Despite the fact that both sides have different objectives and start in different places, the game is remarkably competitive and fair.

Great wedding present for sophisticated couple!
Great wedding present for a couple who spent two years in Norway. Reminder of memories, a great conversation piece. It's well-made and sturdy - and bound to be a fixture on their coffee table for years.

I love the pieces
I love the pieces. Seems like there was a lot of thought and effort put into them. It's a shame that the board didn't have the same care put into it. The game board is complete crap. I wound up ordering a different board off of etsy to play on, because the board is such cheap crap.Like I said, I love the pieces, but be warned about the board.

Nice set!
I've only played a few games so far, but this seems to be a well-constructed set, with lovely pieces. The included rules are very clearly written, and include some useful worked cases as examples. The gameplay from the included rules is easy to pick up and fun.

This was a gift for my son who has raved about it constantly and I was able to give me two beer steins similar to those in the picture. He has taught all of his friends to play and it's quite the conversation piece.
