Although I suppose that you require some basic understanding of how patterns work, those who do not already sew should really start with bought ones and not with trying to design their own.This book is very clear and it does cover most basic forms and shapes, with some more complicated ones thrown in for good measure.I am not an expert seamstrees, but I have been sewing for a long time now and found this book extremely useful and helpful.
