No clear instructions
I've taken some stars off because the instructions on how to build each thing look very complicated. I brought this for my son as he loves building things, he's just turned 13 and I was hoping he would be able to do it unaided but unfortunately he won't be able to because the instructions aren't clear and easy to follow. He hasn't yet made one as he's waiting for his dad to be able to do it with him which is a real shame. I think this would be a challenge for an adult so an 8 year old has no hope unless the are a child geniuse

Disappointing product, seemingly flawed by design.
There are a couple of these solar-powered STEM toys available. This one has a higher rating and is slightly more expensive, and I'm expecting some better quality, but sadly it is not.First, of all, the description falsely said it can be powered by a battery. The instruction did mention that there's a 'battery head' that can replace the 'solar head', but that sadly cannot be found in the package.Being in the UK, as a Christmas present, getting some solar enough to power the toy is sadly impossible. The instruction did mention it can be powered by a light bulb, however, that's only with the traditional incandescent or halogen light bulb. Take that into consideration if you are like me with all my bulbs are either energy saving or LED.The building is tedious and difficult, but that's expected for the kit. However, there are some issues I'd say are defects on the product itself. Examples below.Defect 1: Not enough power to run. I helped my kid built the 'bettle' version, due to how the 'legs' are S-shaped, the toy motor struggle to make it walk. To avoid disappointing my child, I tried to spend some time analyzing the problem. I concluded that either (i) the motor is not powerful enough to run it, OR (ii) the plastic is not well/fit enough to help it along. Having doubt with my halogen bulb, I conjure up a DIY battery link to power the toy, but still, it seems the motor is not powerful enough to run it. Then, I was thinking maybe if the legs are synchronized correctly, it may help the robot to move along. However, as there is no proper fixed angle linkage to the legs (ie compression fit only), and the plastic margin of error is enormous, it is impossible to have synchronized legs.Defect 2: Design flaw. After the 1st disappointment, I asked my kid to choose a wheel-based version, so that it has less reliant on the power of the motor. My kid chose the big wheel version. In that version, I found that the given design on how the 3 smaller wheels should be holding up the big wheel, doesn't work. I suspect the issue is due to the inaccuracy of the plastic parts. This version requires 4 of the components to line up well to fix the 'big wheel' into position. That's 3 of the 'legs' to fix the 'big wheel' into position. I suspect minor variance on the parts adds up to a gap so large that the big wheel just slipped off every time you attempt to get the robot run on those wheels. This is also partly due to the design flaw as it should take into consideration the variance of the parts, and have a design that can be tweaked or adjusted to counter the variance. Sadly, in this case, all angles and holes are given that there is no way you can tweak or adjust to the flaw. Some may think this is due to the parent's ability to follow instructions and unable to properly put the pieces together. However, I'm an engineer by training, and I personally do DIY stuff, I am good with my hands. From Ikea furniture assembly to LEGO toy building, and things in between, I am fairly confident in my ability. So, if this toy is rated for 8 - 14 years old, I'm fairly sure that my argument above is that this toy is defective by design. My and my boy will attempt to build another version of this tomorrow and hope to yield some better results. If it's up to me, I'll have this returned immediately. As this is a Christmas present to my boy, I'd need to discuss with him this option.

Nothing for my 8 1/2 year old son..
My son 8 is been through an emotional roller coaster with this toy. He cried a lot for days, when something went wrong. I really felt for him and wanted to send this hurting toy back where it came from! Tantrums, drama, feeling of helplessness. He even refused several times help from his father and in the end he didn't want to build another model ever. He says he hates it. If he would like to build any robot in the future or did he get traumatised by this?! Normally he loves to assembly and dissemble things! The piece was also hard to get moving as well due to lack of light/ solar energy buffering, although he waited for days when put on to the window sill. Even halogen lights did not help. It did not move at all. What an experience for my son. I sent it back and hopefully get refunded!

Good little bot
Good quality toy with helpful cutters which are needed! The solar panel isn't strong enough for some of the makes but it's fun and keeps us entertained and quiet for some time.

Fun toy but probably not for young children or places without a lot of sunlight
Loved playing with it and building the robot. But I can't imagine a child to do it at least not at 8 years old. It was difficult to do for me in places but especially cutting out the pieces will need adult help.Trying to get it running was difficult as the sun is limited here and we only have led's in the house. So we had to wait for the sun which is frustrating, especially if you need to check if it's working at all.Other than that it's a lot of fun and really cute. A fun little hobby.

Great gift for 10yr old girl! Fab father daughter time.
Fabulous gift for our 10yr old girl! She was super impressed when she opened it and although it was challenging for her, it was a great thing for her to do with her dad and has given hours of fun already! It’s small and has lots of little bits but it comes with bags for all the little bits so as long as you keep it safe it’s fine. It encourages logical thinking, instruction reading, fine motor skills and more!!
