An attractive and useful kitchen item.
We bake all our own bread, and were frustrated with trying to make even and consistent slices when cutting by hand. This works better than several other designs we tried, that weren't made in the U.S. The only down sides we found (and they are minor) were, we had to order a new bread knife since ours was only 8" long, and you must take care to hold the knife straight as you are cutting. If you allow the knife to twist, it tries to dig in to the sides of the slats a little bit. So far the bamboo is hard enough that it hasn't marred the device, so we are being careful. This is an attractive item, and it folds down so neatly that we just place it folded on top of our bread box when we are not using it. It can cut three different size slices, depending on how you place your loaf. Thin on one half, medium (about the thickness of bread slices from the store) on the other half, and thick, if you skip every other slat on the thin side. Some posters were complaining about the plastic end spacer being too flimsy. It's not designed to have the loaf jammed in to it. It is merely a guide to position the loaf at the appropriate position to initiate cutting. Just rest the loaf lightly against it to index for cutting. We love it and recommend it.

Works for wider loaves. Measure anyway.
Holy cow! Thank you! I have a newer Cuasinart breadmaker. All of the bread slicers I have tried so far have been too narrow for my loaves. Plastic or wood, they were all flimsy too. Whatever- a new day has dawned! This one is sturdy, has rubber feet stapled to the bottom corners, and has 2 options for how thin or thick you want your slices. The thin option fits in my toaster! If you have a bagel option on your toaster, I'm sure the thick option would fit just fine. You can't submerge to wash, because duh, it's wood. I rubbed some food safe wood oil on mine to help with clean up (bread crumbs will wipe off easier and it protects the wood). I don't care that it doesn't have a 'crumb catcher' because those little grooves catch crumbs, but sometimes won't let them go! The thick plastic inset is easy to wipe off. Woohoo! This bread slicer has me so excited that it is now clear I am old and uncool. I don't care. Buy it if you make wider loaves or even small round loaves. Yippee!

Love this slicer
I've been using this unit for a few months now...got tired of irregular slices in my homemade bread. I will start by saying that I love how this unit folds flat, even the plastic slicing guide can fit between the folded sides for storage...nicely done! The unit has one side with thin slice guides and one side with thicker guides and if even thicker slices are needed you can simply use the thin side and skip a slot. The unit is well made and I use it constantly as I no longer buy bread and all my bread is homemade. I will agree with another reviewer that you really need a bread knife proper or you will run into issues with the slots. One reviewer complained that the plastic guide was flimsy...well it's only meant as guide to put your bread up against for straight slices so you don't need a fortress for that. The one issue I have run across only once is in my haste to slice some bread I instead found myself cutting some of the wood edges in the slots. Since then I am more aware as I start slicing and have no longer had an issue...but I would like to see this unit with metal sides slots to avoid this issue all together. Although a little pricey I feel it was a good buy and I'm glad I spent the money on it. I could see where a product of lesser quality would have the spring hinges fall apart with constant use. It folds so flat you can easily store it on the counter using practically no space at all...one of it's best qualities. If you make your own bread I feel this is a must have. Highly recommended.

Just what I was looking for!
This thing is great! I've had it a while now and no complaints. I bought this to go with my Breadman machine loaves. It's hard to get even slices and especially hard for the kids! This makes it much safer to use as you have the guides for your knife and no fingers in the way and it gives you nice even slices whatever thickness you choose. It folds up nicely to store it away if you like. I just always keep mine on the counter. I put my loaf in its bag and just set it in the slicer, ready to go! I would highly recommend getting a long bread knife for use with this slicer!! I bought the "Fat Daddio's 14-inch cake slicer/bread knife" here on Amazon to go with and it works perfectly! A 10" or even a 12" knife is going to hit the ends and you won't have room to get a good slicing action going.

If you make homemade bread or buy unsliced bread from the store this slicer is a game-changer
I've owned other less expensive bread slicers over the past 20 years but they were flimsy and did not deliver an even slice of bread after the first slice. I was skeptical about the cost of this slicer but when I got it home and tried it, I was pleasantly surprised at how sturdy it is and how even you can slice bread, slice after slice, with it. I sliced a whole loaf in less than 30 seconds with no mangled slices. While the slicer board is well-designed, the plastic stop is a bit on the flimsy side. I would rather prefer they provide a wooden stop that does not bend. Other than that, I would say it's near perfect. You need a good knife too as your ability to make a good slice of bread cannot be saved with this slicer if you have a dull knife. Make sure your knife is about 9 inches long at minimum and the serrated edges are sharp.

Perfection
Let me start by saying I have purchased at least 3 other bread slicer guides that were cheaper and you get what you pay for. They were junk. They were flimsy, not wide enough and just junk. I did not want to spend $50 on a unit but I wasted at least that much, so I decided to give this one a try. It is AWESOME and I love it! The slices are perfect each and every time. It is sturdy, wide enough for my large loaf of homemade sourdough bread, and the guides are great. I wish I would've spent the money sooner.
