Works great.
I use these to hold several 2.5" SSDs, which are then placed in a Promise Pegasus RAID device. I bought 6 of them, and each of them works great. It's easy to put the SSD in the product: just gently place in, and close the lid...the lid automatically fastens the connectors together. Solid metal construction, as if it can easily survive a drop.

Good for SSD in a tower/server.
I've used a few of these type of enclosures for 2.5" SSD drives and this one is my favorite so far, it's sturdy, secure, and all-metal; some of the ones people are selling for around the same price are plastic made to look like metal, sheesh. Plus, it works easily in the (original tower-style) Mac Pro, many of the other enclosures I've come across are made in ways that impair use in the MP drive sleds (mounting style, screw location, etc)

Good quality but cannot use if you need to attach a thermal sensor to your new drive
Great design and sturdy construction. I replaced my mid 2007 iMac HDD with an SSD and needed a drive adapter. I bought this and an open design drive converter bracket....because I wasn't sure which one to use at the time I was purchasing the parts I needed. While both are made very well, I went with the open drive converter bracket so I can easily attach the thermal sensor onto my SSD. Rather than returning it, I gave the Icy Dock to my bro-in-law so he can use it for his HDD to SSD conversion.

Decent Product Overall
I purchased this on the recommendation of Drobo for use in my 800i with a Samsung SSD in anticipation of the SSD tier functionality being released. I confirmed it fit the Drobo well, but never used it for that purpose because the feature was not released before I retired my unit in favor of a faster FreeNAS system. I have since used move the SSD to my desktop where it mounted up nicely in a 3.5 inch slot. It's expensive to use as a simple 2.5 to 3.5 convert, but overall good. One draw back was that it was clearly designed to have a spacer in the front of the case to lock the drive. My unit did not come with one despite the instructions clearly showing a spacer being inserted. I believe that the unit would run cooler and quieter with a rotating drive if there was a spacer in place to dampen the vibrations and conduct heat to the case, but since I had an SSD, it didn't really matter.Overall, I recommend.

Yay, it works!!
I have an older HP Z600 workstation that has high end processors / graphics card, but the storage was painfully slow, and I wanted to breathe some new life into the system to use for flight simulation. This adapter allowed me to easily replace the hard drive with a Sandisk Extreme Pro Solid State Drive, and WOW what a difference in performance. Installation took about 5 minutes. Open the dock, pop in the SSD, close the dock, fit it onto the disk rails in the workstation chassis, slide in the whole assembly, done. The system boots and loads software in no time. What else can you ask for?

Limited by sheet metal fabrication process
Due to a potential shipping delay, I ordered the similarly-purposed plastic version (Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-2B) of this item at the same time. In the end, both arrived the same day so I had an opportunity to compare closely and select which one to use for my SSD installation task.I opted for this metal version, and it does work (after one try when the SSD wasn't recognized by the system, remedied by pulling the caddy back out, fussing over the adapter without really changing anything, then re-installing). However, it did leave me with some concerns, as follows.- the holes for the four mounting screws were correctly positioned but required more than the expected amount of force to drive in the screws. It was as if the holes were not pre-threaded. Tightening these screws into a real 3.5 drive feels like a precision operation. Tightening them into this adapter made me hope I wasn't cross-threading the screws.- there is a clever mechanical linkage that automatically slides your SSD into the connector fitting as you close the hinged lid of the adapter. Unfortunately, since the lid hides the evidence, you don't really know how well the SSD connector has been mated into the adapter's connector. All the way? Or perhaps a millimeter shy? We are depending on the precision of the sheet metal parts for a tight (but non-damaging) fit.- there are air vents, but not particularly extensive. My SSD temperature is running about 85F (in 70F ambient) - this may be normal (I don't know what a "normal" SSD temp is).In comparison, Icy Dock's plastic version of this article doesn't look so bad. The plastic injection molding is probably more precise than the other's sheet metal work. It has nice looking brass threaded inserts for the mounting screws. You snap your SSD in yourself, then slide on the plastic lid, so the critical installation step is in sight. Next time, I would probably go with the plastic version.

SSD / HDD Converter for AHCI Hot Swap Cage
Purchased for only 1 reason - To allow a Laptop format SSD or HDD to be installed into a Removable Hot Swap Cage for complete AHCI Hot Swap Performance. Works great! Protects Drive Connections too! Have used both the plastic and this metal one from Icy Dock. Never had a problem with either Unit. Supposedly this Metal Converter Unit is better suited for HDD while the Plastic Converter Unit is acceptable for SSDs. Both have adequate Heat Dissipation & Ventilation. Drive alignment is perfect. Have not tried either yet on the new WDC Black2 SSD/HDD which has a smaller form factor than a Standard Laptop HDD. Great to have in the Toolkit IF you ever need to work on a Laptop HDD as in Cloning. No performance degradation. Used in conjunction with iStarUSA Hot Swap Cages sold here on Amazon.com - Never tried usinf one of these without the iStarUSA Hot Swap Cages. The 2 Bay / 3 Drive iStarUSA Hot Swap Cage goes in every PC Build. Easiest way to manage multiple HDDs. We have the AHCI Hot Swap Technology on the Motherboards, make use of it!

Good solid product - simplifies replacing HD with SSD
This is a very nice product indeed. Well made and well finished. Simplicity itself to use. I used it to replace a failing 3.5" HDD in my iMac with an SSD. Couldn't have been easier (well except for delving into the byzantine innards of the iMac). I think it's well worth paying a little extra for this item rather than the cheaper 2.5" to 3.5" plastic caddies. The form factor precisely matches a standard 3.5" drive, all the holes connectors are in precisely the right place. Easy-peezy and highly recommended.

Excellent produit
