Excellent coverage for light to moderate rain
I bought the medium size for my Sierra Designs Revival pack. It's a 65 liter/3,950 cu in pack. The medium rain cover fits it quite well. I read a few of the other reviews and one of them specifically mentioned how this rain cover can only cover the top of the pack up to your shoulder harnesses and if it's really raining hard you can get water down your back and possibly through your pack. Depending on your pack, this is possible. However, keep in mind that Mountainsmith is making a rain cover to apply to many types of packs/situations. The only rain packs I have seen which cover the packs exceptionally well are when they are designed and sold by the pack manufacturer and are model-specific. I don't even know how common that is at this point in time but when I have seen them they covered very well b/c they were customized to the pack. If you need some, albeit no perfect, rain protection this cover is as good as any out there in my opinion. If, when you try this cover out on your pack, you find that there will be a gap for heavy rain to penetrate and possibly get your gear wet, you may have to plan on having extra covered such as a tarp or a poncho you can drape over your back while wearing.

These are nice inexpensive basic pack covers made with a midweight polyurethane coated fabric and taped seams. Sizing is always a challenge with pack covers but the Mountainsmith website lists correct dimensions and fit ranges...look and measure and take into account any vast differences in the shape of your pack or the extra space needed for gear strapped to the outside. At only 4oz this is decent and you could lighten it a little by replacing the cinch cord and cord lock with something different. If you want ultralight, look at the covers from Osprey or Sea To Summit. If you need extra durable, get a heavier fabric pack cover in the 8-10oz range. The stitching on both of my Mountainsmith covers was well done and I have had no troubles with them...cheap cordlock on these so if it ever breaks (can't see that happening really) just replace it with another for 25 cents.

Took raincovers on trip to Thailand. Evenin downpours, keeps backpack dry. Use caution when applying cover and removing cover as small puddles can form at bottom of cover which can then get bottom of backpack wet. This would only happen in severely heavy rain from rain soaking down backpack straps or if cover isn't covering pack properly. The cover also helps prevent people from being able to unzip pockets while you are wearing pack in crowded urban areas. Don't let presence of cover allow you to drop your guard from pickpockets in urban areas, but cover can help deter thiefs from accessing backpack. I use the covers on my backpack when I get caught in rain while riding my motorcycle at home.

Price is right, pretty good product
I have Tamrac 5587 photographer backpackย Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Photo/Laptop Backpack (Black) ย with the optional large SPX-777 side pockets attached to it.ย SPX777 M.A.S. Large Padded Pockets (Black) ย The MEDIUM Mountainsmith Rain Cover covers all of this easily with room to spare. As noted by others, these rain covers run quite large...I think I could also get it over a sleeping bag lashed to the bottom of my pack if desired. One note, a product feature listed here ("Hook-and-loop closure and angled cord attachment point") has nothing to do with the rain cover, it actually refers to the bag the cover is stuffed into. An example of mfr. trying to make something sound more exciting than it is...but at less than half the price of the Tamrac-brand rain cover, which does not fit my pack with the added side bags, this one from Mountainsmith is very reasonable. I haven't tested it in the rain but expect no problems and will update if I learn otherwise.

Good, but bikers beware!
This is a great bag rain cover, but like the other reviews state they run really big!!! Originally I was going to get an extra large, and after reading the other reviews I went for the medium and it is still big! Though I am not really complaining I use a crumpled sling messenger bag that is never the same size day to day. But Bike commuters like me please note that there is nothing reflective at all on it! The only thing that is not black is the yellow logo in the middle. Saying that, it does do a very good job keeping things dry.

Large, covers my rEvo micro rebreather for airport carry on and security. First use the spring slide for drawstring broke, so now I have to untie by hand the string, a pain at each airport, because I get checked every flight. Cover is thinner and tore quickly, but for the price I paid, oh well. If I were a regular travelled, I'd look for something else more robust

Ripped almost immediately - You get what you pay for!
Bought the Medium to use as a cover for my REI Crestrail 65 Pack (I have a size Small, so it's actually a 60L capacity pack). When I attached my sleeping roll to the bottom of my pack the cover fit very snugly, but the cinch closure had to be fiddled with each time I put it on so that it would not slip down and expose the top of my pack to rain. If I didn't have the sleeping roll attached, the cover was fairly loose, but could be cinched down without bunching an excessive amount of material. My main complaint was that it ripped (at the top, near the finicky cinch closure) halfway into a two-week backpacking trip and I had to perform duct-tape triage on it in the field. I did use it as a dust/dirt cover on my pack while travelling in a crowded bus to the trailhead, but I didn't put it through a lot of strain or abrasion. I was very disappointed in the quality of this cover and will purchase a more expensive one in the future.

Great cover, can't be beat for the price
Grabbed this before an 8-day backpacking trip and it worked perfectly with my Gregory Z55. We got nailed with rain a couple of days and it kept my pack bone dry.Packs down small, it is made of great materials. I expect nothing less from Mountainsmith, as they're a solid company.Great bang for your buck, highly recommended.
