Playing Ball with the Boys: The Rise of Women in the World of Men's Sports

Definitely One of the Boys
I found the entire book compelling, especially the segments concerning Christine Brennan and Janet Guthrie. Betsy Ross should have a recurring role on Apple TV's The Morning Show as a sports correspondent. She would be great. Now after reading her book, I want to ask:. When will the Los Angeles Lakers wise up and hire Cheryl Reeve as their new head coach?

Just well done. Balanced and fair.
I bought the book for one of my Graduate School intern classes to help see another perspective to world of sports, which it did very well. Betsy Ross is a local celeb and has brought a lot of good commentary to news and sports.

An excellent read for young professional women
I really enjoyed reading about Betsy's experiences as a young woman trying to make it in the cutthroat and male-dominated sports industry. I liked that Betsy interviewed women from a diverse range of professions because it provides a well-rounded perspective on gender issues throughout the entire sports industry, in a way that inspires and empowers female readers. I would recommend this book to all young women who are about to enter the professional world.

Wonderful book
Good stories here for any young lady who hopes to make a living in sports or sports media, I hope parents give this book to teen daughters.

Shallow view of women in sports
As a freelance female sports writer, I found the topic of the book incredibly interesting. However, it lacks a deeper perspective of women's role in sports. Betsy Ross tells in the stories of her and other women who have found their way in the testosterone saturated world of sports. Ross, a journalist, not only presents the profiles of other female journalists but of female athletes, coaches and team managers. While every women has a unique story, the profiles become formulaic. They all follow the pattern of- how she got into sports- her resume- how her gender hindered her- advice for the younger generation. Also, everyone cheers about Title IX, the legislation that has helped provide equal opportunities for both genders in sports. Everyone that Ross talks to has no problem with Title IX until the very end of the book where negative issues are given a page. While Ross's book deserves to be read by young women who would like to enter sports, it glosses over more important issues.
