Picky reader LOVES this book
This book is great. It kept my attention the whole way through to the point where I'm at now. There wasn't a chapter that I didn't feel was important to read. I looked ahead a little to make sure I could give you a good review on the book. All the titles in the book would grab any teens attention. It nails almost all of the subject a teen would have problems with in his/her life. I never thought there would be a book out there that actually seems like others understand what some teens go through. Josh is a very intelligent and bright guy and really seems to know what he is talking about. I love how in the beginning he talks about how he had gone through a lot in his past, and feels like he can relate to the reader. That is a very important part of the book. That is a huge attention grabber. As soon as a reader feels they can relate to the book then they are automatically sucked in. The start of the book is perfect in my point of view. I'm a really really picky reader, and I need to be interested right off the bat. When Josh says that he doesn't think he's better then the reader, or that he doesn't know everything is really cool. Lots of teens don't like people who think they know everything, or that they are better then them. That was a cool thing to say in the beginning of the book. This book is a life changing experience. There are many kids out there that feel like they are alone out there and that they are the only one going through problems. Josh is a guy they can relate too. Everyone needs a person there for them no matter what.

This book changed my perspective
It isn't very often that a book changes my perspective on things. However this book, with out question, did.Right off the bat, Shipp tells you that the goal of the book is not about helping you dominate the world- but to help you dominate your own world by rocking at what you do and defeating the "villains" in your life.Generally, the problem I have with most teenage advice books (I'm 15) is that they try too hard either to appeal to teens, or become more of a cheesy life-coaching session than an advice book. Luckily, this book strays far away from these two pitfalls. Josh Shipp writes in such a way that when reading, you really feel as if that is how he would talk to you if you were sitting down together in person, making the book easy and fun to read. This book offers up witty humor, funny stories, and good, solid advice. It's definitely worth reading.

Not my sensitive teenager's favorite, but I loved the message
I read this with my 17-year-old daughter and my take on it was that I wish I'd heard all this when I was her age, but of course, there's nothing like hind-sight. Her take was not as positive, unfortunately, mainly because she didn't like the author's tone in which she felt he was condescending when, for example, he offers his insight on "dominating your own world," followed by the question, "Are you willing to dominate your own world? If you can't answer "yes," just shut the book, eBay it, and use the money to buy yourself an assortment of suckers because that's what you are, a sucker, and that's the way you're choosing to live your life. I hope you like the flavor."Her feeling was that these follow-up lines may have been meant to be funny, but it was a turn-off to her. She is a sensitive young lady, who likes to take her time to ponder new ideas, so this style of push back just didn't work for her. I get others may not have the same reaction as my daughter, and while I did feel it was a tad pushy, I forgave Mr. Shipp, because I still think his insights and advice are very good. Like I said, I wish someone had told me this stuff at that age - would have saved me some of my early gray hairs - or maybe some of those I caused my mother back then!?

How to survive being an American teenager
For those of you who don't know Josh Shipp is a motivational speaker and teen advice guru and has his own Tv show Jump Shipp. His latest book is a written for teens and will keep their attention as it guides you to avoid all the pitfalls of adolescence. Josh had a rough childhood giving him plenty of experience to learn the bad in people and how to develop ways to deal with them. His new book is amusing and helpful. People who had parents who didn't guide them could use this book as well, not just teens. He categorizes people into the following: Heroes, and seven villains. Ghosts, Ninjas, Pirates, Robots, Vampires, Zombies, Puppies. He tells you how they operate He then gets you to look at yourself if you a teen lying to yourself and tells you how to dominate your world, in a healthy way of course. He tells you how to create your identity. I admire his maturity given what he has gone through. I am a psychic licensed clinical psychologist and I can tell you its not pretty. After telling you how to do what you love, find a way to make a success and never quit, he thanks the special people in his life. Josh uses real life examples so you know this advice is based on experience and not high nosed thinking. If you want to motivate a teen with attitude, try this book. Also highly recommended for teen males. He reaches them well with his humor and realistic perspective.

Excellent approach to the subject
Bought this to inspire workshops for teenagers, and found it really useful. The approach to the whole subject of how to deal with life's problems is original and appealing, and combines a light touch with some quite profound ideas.
