The sig was German speaking Jews who used to live in Germany & were formed to infiltrate Tobruk with the intention of taking the sas disguised as prisoners into the heart of axis held territory to blow up aircraft & gun emplacements.

A Heck of a Read!
The author, Damien Lewis, has done an incredible job in his retelling of this incredible story. No thriller novel could ever compete for page-turning intensity - made all the more intense through the knowledge that this is fact, it happened. The courage, audacity and sheer bloody-mindedness of those who took part is beyond comparison, or belief for that matter! Yet it happened, carried out by brave, fearless men in the darkest days of WW2. A highly commendable read.

A story of exceedingly brave men.
A fast paced rendition of one of the most ridiculously brave raids of WWII.This is very much a 'boys own' book, and yet it is no fictitious, gung-ho story. The men, whose tale is told within the pages of this book, were almost beyond heroic; they were erring on plain bonkers.I cannot decide which element was more dangerous, the suicidal head-long lunge at the town of Tobruk or crossing a thousand miles of desert in dodgy trucks with little supplies and zero support!Genuine bunch of real men, and true heroes.Good story. Give it a read!

Added to my knowledeg of teh SAS and desert warfare. Not a bad book
I made the mistake of researching some of the facts half way through reading and came across a document which gave me the whole story in about 4 pages - probably the original stimulus for the book I suspect. The story is extremely interesting as are some of the characters. I think the author moves around the action a little too much which left me confused towards the end of the book about who was on which part of each mission
