It is an absolutely amazing knife. The handle is made extremely well and fits into my hand perfectly, even with that groove around the middle. The blade is thick for a knife but it's also very sturdy. My edge did come sharp but I put my own edge on it. As a heads up, because it is hard to tell from the picture, the edge is on the straight side, and the spine of the knife is the curved side. The sheath is cool because it's horizontal but it's poorly made. If you run with it, the safety will fail and the knife will slide right out. I'm getting my own sheath made but nonetheless, it's an amazing knife.

The handle is phenominal
So I just received my Seax and the title on the product grossly understates how beautiful the rosewood handle is. Truly it is stunning, and so well crafted you cannot feel where wood ends and the steel begins. The weight of the knife is adequate, balance is actually probably a bit better than you would expect for the design. I am glad I bought it. But you may be asking why four stars instead of five. Well, first, its advertised as sharp, which is an interesting distinction, sharp can have a lot of different meanings depending on the intended use, with a large range of angles denoting the idea of "sharp", but since I can run my finger along the blade with pressure and have no fear of cutting it, I can confidently say this is not sharp. Plenty useful, but as is, not sharp. The second reason is while so much of this knife has just fantastic attention to detail, whomever polished the blade did not do a great job, there are two blemishes I am going to have to work out, one shows a tiny bit of rust on it. Its not the end of the world, but at this price point I would not expect to have to polish and sharpen a blade.Ohh, almost forgot, it comes with a sheath. You are not paying for a sheath, so it does hold a knife, but its not great.

A superb knife - especially at this price!
Well maybe I got lucky again, but if I did, it is the tenth time in a row. My seax arrived quite sharp with one little burr about halfway down the edge that will strop out quickly. The grip scales look much better than in the ad photos and have some nice burl in them. They look more like walnut than rosewood. A good thing. The fit and finish are much more in line with a knife that is $150 rather than $35 delivered, lol. As for the sheath, it is modern styled but could be carried horizontally if you wanted to. I am going to make a period correct one for it though so it can be carried horizontally with the edge up. I'm not a Viking re-enactor so this isn't critical, and I'll keep the one that came with it for camping or hunting use, This knife will be aged and have some Norse runes put into the scales and maybe even the blade later. It is a steal at this price, and I very highly recommend it if this is what they are putting out now. My other 9 Poshland knives are period correct Matt Easton designed ones, and they have all been excellent except for one. That one was merely VERY GOOD when I got it, but is now a superb knife after just a little work by me. To say I am happy with this seax is truly an understatement. I'm thrilled. Maybe I'll post some photos when I finish customizing it. Stay tuned, lol...Edited: Well I picked up some very nice chestnut colored buffalo hide, so I will indeed be making a sheath for it. I also got some fairly thick copper sheeting to use to secure the hangers. But in the meantime, I adapted the one that came with it. Just drill out the rivets that hold the belt loop on. Then split the loop lengthwise. I split in in three. Then I sewed the new "loops" to the side after progressively shortening them. The knife now hangs properly with the edge up and it looks pretty good. The two holes that remained after removing the original loop were filled with two copper rivets and then aged. The blade itself was patinaed by using layers of Birchwood Casey Plumb Brown, followed by that same company's Super Blue. Card with 0000 steel wool and oil between coats. The knife now has a nice patina. I even put a few runes on the sheath. Odin's rune and the rune for his spear, Gungnir, are on the front. On the back are the runes for my name. Lots of fun. To top it off after about 15 minutes on my ceramic sticks, followed by a few minutes of stropping, and now the entire blade is shaving sharp from hilt to tip. Lol, it is getting harder and harder to find any hair on my arms to shave!

Sheath rivets both broke upon putting it on belt. Blade good for price
Blade shaving sharp. No blemishes. Handle comfortable. Brass guard, meh. Sheath garbage.Back to the blade-nice polish, looks to be a semi tapered full tang. Tip blunt.

If you want it for practical use of any kind I DO NOT reccomend this knife. The heat treat(if any) is not good. The metal is soft and will not hold an edge. But as for a show piece this knife looks great.

Buy it!
I was looking for a seax for a while and kept coming back to this one so I bought it. It came very quickly and I was pretty excited. First thing I noticed is that the bald is thick and robust so I won't worry about any bending. Second is that it comes with an edge and the blade is covered in oil. This tells me it's a quality carbon steel. And the handle is really comfortable, even with the ridge in the middle. I actually prefer the ridge to be there now that I feel it. This knife is underpriced if you ask me! I will be buying from the company again. I don't think I have to go over the whole sheath thing. I do like the horizontal design since that is how it was worn throughout history, which is a pretty nice touch.

Great knife, Shoddy sheath
I love the knife. It's a functional work of art, very well made. The sheath it comes with however looks like an afterthought. The stitching could have been dyed to match the black dye of the leather. When worn horizonally the edge of a seax blade should face up, this protects the sheath from being cut. This one faces down. If the sheath had been extended to cover the handle no retention strap would be needed [much like a modern fillet knife sheath] These details were worked out 1000 years ago for valid reasons.I am having a custom sheath made for mine and made this decision before purchasing as I saw the provided sheath in the pics.Updated review 7/23/2017I now own 6 of these knives. 2 for my use and 4 as future Yule gifts to fellow Heathens. Someone at Poshland was listening as one of the last ones purchased is apparently a later production batch in that it has different packaging than the rest came in and the thread in the sheath is now black colored. Nice to see them respond to reviews. All the knives are well made and I am proud to present them as gifts to friends.

Great blade sheath needs work
Amazing knife my only 2 complaints are the with of the tip aswell as the sheath construction and leather the tip was so thin that one wrong landing from a short distance throw rolled the tip bu that in and of it self is a plus as the blade didnt crack and with some sharpening ive got the tip back but it was ridiculasly sharp for out of the box a few burls but nothing major and the tip was surgical great for cutting not so forgiving for a thrower though and as for the sheath it was well constructed in the fact its solid but the leather hadent been treated right and was very dry so with some carry i had a few tiny rips but some epoxy and electical tape fixed that but other then that this knife is amazing im very impressed with the blade, sheath not so much but for tbe price its a steal
