Loved this book when I was a teen, BUT
This book is thorough, well written, well compiled, well researched. I loved it when I was a teen, doing a report about Selena. But after reading books that followed: Justice for Selena by Carlos Valdez, and To Selena, With Love by Chris Perez. Some facts have emerged that make this book somewhat dated. For one, it mentions here that the nickname Buffy was given by Yolanda's family for her. That is false. Suzette and Selena used that term amongst the two of them as a term of endearment. Yolanda leeched onto the scene and fit her way in. I found that very appauling. AND, the author seems to believe Yolanda's side of the story as he states she put the gun to her head. How and Why would this author believe someone who has a set of stories that change with the wind. She stated she was raped by a man in mexico, then she changed it to two men, then she claimed abraham raped her, then she stated she wanted to kill herself and that she held a gun to her head in the final meeting with selena, which there is no proof. Only proof she held the gun to her head in the standoff, After killing Selena. It is sick that many people seem to believe that. BUT, Wake up people. In the stand off Yolanda said something that changed all of that. She said in plain language: "HE MADE ME DO IT". Meaning because of Abraham catching her stealing and then Selena turning against her because of it, she murdered her because of him getting in the way of her theft and obesession and control. Right there, admission of murder. "He made me do it." Do what? Murder Selena. She also tried to say there were thugs who came in and shot Selena. So with all of those lies, not to mention cutting up a shirt claming she was raped in it, when the woman at the desk at the motel said that the shredded shirt was what Yolanda was wearing the evening she signed in to the motel, which shows the lie that Yolanda was raped in mexico earlier that day because she was wearing the exact shirt hours later. It was later proved the shirt was cut with scissors and all was shown to be another lie from Yolanda. So I don't believe ANYTHING Yolanda says. I believe the doctor Marinez and Yolanda were trying to blackmail and destroy Selena. It is all lies. So being as good as it is, this book falls short of getting at the detailed facts that the later books get to but it has such thorough writing and info that it is a gem for selena fan beginners. But remember: Do not believe ANYTHING involving Yolanda anywhere you read it, she is an evil demented liar murderer. Get this book for a primer on Selena's story but remember to delve deeper and get the Justice for Selena book and also Chris book. NEVER believe Anything that yolanda or her family state, whatsoever, its like getting bit by a poisonous snake.

Mixed feelings
The first half of the book, I feel is for the people of Corpus Christi and San Antonio Texas, maybe the older generation. We're given a music history lesson on Tejano music. People from that region and era will have an inkling of what he is talking about. I'm from New Zealand, these names, songs genre if music he is talking about is meaningless to me. If it were in a visual medium like a documentary, then Bob's your uncle. There are a few tender moments where Selena finds herself infatuated with Chris. Love it. The book source material are compiled from interviews articles and quotes from Selena and various other people. The two people I have an issue with is Yolanda herself and "The Doctor". Sorry but those two people have no credibility. He says something to the effect that if he weren't married he and Selena would be together. If you're going to quote people then quote Selena on how much she loved Chris, her family values on marriage.I finished reading this book over a week ago. Can't remember what my other thoughts were. I'll have to read it again sometime.

Good book
As a huge Selena fan, I couldn't wait to read this book. It started out really well and I enjoyed reading about Abrahams past and Selena's time as a child but I found one thing in the book that I know for certain isn't true which led me to doubt other facts about the rest of the book. Chris and Selena eloped on their own terms, even Chris himself has made that very clear in his own book. In "Como La Flor", it states that once Abraham fired Chris from the group, Selena was so torn up and depressed that he told her as long as she and Chris married and lived next door, they could be together. Wrong. Selena and Chris went and obtained a marriage license at the courthouse and eloped that way without her father's consent. Abraham was indeed furious but even Chris says that after his initial anger, he calmed down and was old fashioned enough to respect their marriage and accept it. All-in-all though I really enjoyed this book. Some parts that weren't about Selena bored me a bit but there's many things I read that I didn't know about her which I loved. If you're a fan of Selena, it is definitely worth reading!

a warm true-life story
I must say that I had never heard of Selena till I saw her tv movie. Then I was interested and even saw the tv movie a couple of other times. When I was surfing amazon.com and saw books about her I bought this book cause it told of her life from being born to the tragic end. I had also bought the book written by her very saddened husband Chris Perez.Anyone who is a fan should read the book to get a better understanding of what a fantastic voice this lovely girl had and of all the awards she received. She was just starting to break through the world of music when she was so tragicly shot down.
