surprising
I thought the book was excellent. I being a white English-american woman was forced to question everything negative I ever heard about Malcolm. I can truly say his message is inspiring. For those who are uncomfortable about Malcolm's message, I challenge you to put yourself in his place with all the experiences and pain he has gone through in his life. I challenge you to look through the tears and suffering that invisibly envelope his message to see a real human being wanting to better the world for all people.

Essential Malcolm
This is a great collection of Malcolm's post Nation of Islam speeches that will give you a broad perspective on Malcolm's ideas, beliefs and values. Malcolm grew rapidly in the 11 months after his split from the NOI and up to his death. In these speeches you will see that Malcolm was in an authentic search for self-improvement and a way to better the substandard conditions of his people. You will also see that in contrast to the kinder, gentler Malcolm that many try to label him as in this period, you still see that same anger for the government and its injustices that Malcolm always displayed.I believe that many people self-righteously try to pit the "good Malcolm" post Mecca against the "violent demagogue" of the Nation of Islam. I believe this assertion is incorrect. Aside from his ideas of separation and belief in the innate evil of all whites, Malcolm's views did not change significantly after his trip to Mecca. He always advocated self-defense, he never embraced non-violent civil disobedience, and he was always disdainful of the corrupt and hypocritical white power structure until his dying day. However, many people who want to discount Malcolm X completely write off Malcolm pre Mecca so they do not have to face the many truths that Malcolm spoke throughout his whole career. These speeches are essential for the person who wants a true analysis of who Malcolm was and what really went on during this very important period of his life.

An underrated, rational and intelligent man.
This is a collection of Malcolm X's speeches and written work. It's a useful insight into the mind of one of the great civil rights campaigners of the early 1960s USA. Malcolm X concluded that asking the racists and KKK to treat black people better was not working. He thought that fighting back was the only way to protect the rights of black people, hence the title: By Any Means Necessary. He was an advocate of using politics, of getting black people involved, but seems disappointed by the actions of the two political parties. The book includes a short biography of his life and his involvement with The Nation of Islam, his travels to various parts of Africa and how that influenced what he thought. He was assassinated before his work was completed. You can hear the frustration at the prejudice he encountered, yet he remains rational and open to ideas. If you have any interest in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, this is a useful and insightful book.

Malcom in reinform

One of the most honest and brilliant minds
Firstly I would like to start of by saying that for those who are just started to learn about Malcolm X and his extraordinary life which contributed and still contributes much to our lives today, that you start off with the autobio first then read this book I say that purely because I found it a lot more cohesive to read the autobio then move towards this book because the mans ideology changed and that is visible and explained in the autobio. Hence if you read this first then you may slightly get confused. In reviewing this book I must admit I will be bias in my opinion because the man himself has had a intricate part in altering my life for the better, however for Malcolm X followers who have not read this book you will read a man who's love for revolution, justice and realism developed so much that you will realise that if he had not been assassinated his plans with the OAAU would have changed the world. I would highly recommend this for a Malcolm X follower. For those who are jus started to learn about the man that is Malcolm X I would recommend this book because not only will you see the inner revolution that took place inside the man that is misunderstood due to propaganda but his coming of age and just makes you think if only his vision had took place how the world would have become better. To finish with I shall say one thing....the main objective of this book is to make you realise...if you want something then you work for it By Any Means Necessary.
