Not What It Purports To Be
For the most part, this is not a book of jewelry designed by artists, i.e. no brooches designed by Picasso or Miro or even anything by Calder, although Picasso and Calder are at least mentioned. No artist you've heard of. Rather, it's high-fashion jewelry designed by professional jewelry designers, mostly in the clunky-junky, pseudo-organic, accretive style of that era, all very high-end. Some photos appear more than once in the book, so there aren't many photos total. And no mention at all of the more interesting and innovative jewelers of that time such as Hermann Junger, William Harper, Eleanor Moty, Robert Ebendorf, Jacqueline Mina, Anton Cepka, Claus Bury, Albert Paley, Bruce Metcalf... the list could go on and on, jewelers who made beautiful things which make you think. Most of the designs in this book have not aged well and, despite the intentions of some of the designers, would not qualify as art, only as expensive baubles for rich people anxious to display their wealth. While the history of these jewels may need to be recorded, it does not make for an interesting read.
