Now more than ever, content must be visual if it is to travel far. Readers everywhere are overwhelmed with a flow of data, news, and text. Visuals can cut through the noise and make it easier for readers to recognize and recall information. Yet many researchers were never taught how to present their work visually. This book details essential strategies to create more effective data visualizations. Jonathan Schwabish walks readers through the steps of creating better graphs and how to move beyond simple line, bar, and pie charts. Through more than five hundred examples, he demonstrates the doโs and donโts of data visualization, the principles of visual perception, and how to make subjective style decisions around a chartโs design. Schwabish surveys more than eighty visualization types, from histograms to horizon charts, ridgeline plots to choropleth maps, and explains how each has its place in the visual toolkit. It might seem intimidating, but everyone can learn how to create compelling, effective data visualizations. This book will guide you as you define your audience and goals, choose the graph that best fits for your data, and clearly communicate your message. Review: A game changer in using charts to tell your story - Jonathan Schwabish is an excellent teacher/author, thorough without being dry. They way he's organized the book supports quick learning in a logical order, and he has given me a strong argument for convincing my colleagues to use more than just pie and bar charts. Jonathan also knows his stuff about connecting with diverse audiences and tailoring your dataviz to engage with the audience, get right to the point, and retain the information it conveys. Review: An absolutely phenomenal data viz book - This is a fantastic book that I assign as supplement to my econometric course. The text is clear and direct, with great guidance for best practices on how to create beautiful and engaging figures for data analysis. What I like most about the text is that unlike many data viz books, it focuses on concrete features of data visualization that can immediately improve presentation, rather than leaving aesthetic decisions up to the reader. As someone who is not particularly artistic, it was very helpful to see what dimensions are most important to focus on -- I will not necessarily be creating pictures on the NYTimes homepage, but I can make far better figures than I used to.

Packed with informative content and engaging to read!
This is a highly informative and easy to read book on data and data visualization. Having spent a career using and communicating with data across several sectors for very technical policy and program issues, I found myself continually saying "I wish I had this book years ago!" It is very easy to read, even for those who aren't familiar with technical concepts or have an extensive background in this area. What's great is that Jon also shows you how to integrate creative and informative data visualizations into your overall project or presentation, related to and helping your written content as well. Because Jon practices what he preaches, the pages literally pop and instantly communicate facts and figures; and more importantly, it inspired me to create the same way, and apply these tools in my own work.

Extensive overview of chart types
The main part of this book provides an overview of the different chart types that are available. There is a lot to choose from and each reader, including the more experienced data visualizers, will find a couple of charts that they have never encountered before or learn about a different angle to a familiar chart. The categorisation of the chart types is pretty arbitrary from time to time and doesn't feel right sometimes. Including counts in the section Qualitative is an example. The readability of certain charts is also a bit problematic as charts are squeezed into a single page. Nice bonus chapters to me are the notes on developing a style guide for data visualization and 10 guidelines for better tables. Overall worth the read and handy if you look for inspiration for making your next viz

Best for academics and wonks
I have read many visualization books, most of which are aimed at business users. I also teach visualization, and for my audience (graduate students), I use this book as the text. I still love other popular books in this genre (Storytelling with Data is a classic), but you can't really use that approach in an academic environment. This you can. PhD students should jump on this one.

Excellent book!! Just a phenomenal experience to read!!
The care and craftsmanship that went into *every single page* of this book is just astounding. Wonderfully written in an accessible style, this book delivers. The print quality is absolutely fantastic, every page is colorful and glossy, which makes it a joy to handle. It's so wonderful to come across something that is so well done, so on point, that you want to make sure anyone thinking of buying it takes the plunge.

Great book, poor binding
Great content. Well-written. Good examples. One of the best intro books on the topic. And I've read a lot of these for the data viz part of my job. 3 stars because the binding is poor quality. It's some kind of light glue holding the pages in. I'm three chapters in and the first 20 pages are now loose and falling out. More are going to peel out.

An incredibly thoughtful guide to data visualization
Better Data Visualizations is a great reference for any data focused individual. Jon does a great job of breaking down the where, when, why, and how of modern visualization. A highly recommended read for those looking to increase their knowledge on these topics.

There's loads of value in this book for anyone who creates charts
The book contains hundreds of charts encompassing loads of different chart types. The book has been well organised into different sections. You can either read cover to cover or just find the specific type of chart you are looking for e.g time, qualitative, geostationary etc. On top of displaying interesting charts, it also describes how to choose between each one for your data as well as best practices and design tips. 100% I would recommend as a companion guide to chart selection and design.

Excellent Content - Practical Advice
This book is a fantastic resource for bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application. I've recently applied it to transform a basic Power BI matrix into something truly outstanding, following the ten critical steps outlined in chapter 11. It's brimming with valuable insights, all underpinned by solid research. An early issue with the book involved pages detaching, which affected my copy as well. However, a quick message to the author resulted in a replacement being swiftly dispatched. Such responsiveness deserves commendation. Ultimately, it's the content that truly matters, not the initial hiccups with the printing. I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to enhance their visualization capabilities.
