Bonhoeffer Abridged: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

I read the unabridged version of this book, and I really appreciate this abridged version to help me hone in on the important principles.

I received this book in 2018 and just now read it--what can I say--I always have many books to read. Very interesting and well written. I know it was received promptly and in the meantime I had visited a used book store and stocked up on cheap paperbacks--hence why I just read this. Bonhoeffer was a truly great pastor and teacher when Hitler came to power. He was put to death way too early it would seem and yet I believe God is in control and I have no doubt His timing is perfect and also no doubt where Bonhoeffer is now.

This book is like-new, as promised.

The means by which Hitler’s evil infiltration proceeded into the power structure of Germany has many parallels it the United States today. Divide and conquer tactics using secrecy, media deception and SS terror pitted German against German.

Easy to understand the happenings/time frame going on in the period and where Dietrich fit into all of it.Did have to pull out my dictionary more time than I ever have before, and I thought my word knowledge was broad already.

True story about Bonhoeffer & WWII & the Nazi’s.

Never have I felt more closely connected to a historical figure. Anyone can write about the actions of a historical figure. But, this biography takes you deep in to the psyche & faith, providing the apologetic of a truly intriguing Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy & Theologian.

It is truly amazing to think that a man so influential in life felt so inadequate. His parents wanted him to be an attorney. He wanted the seminary and the world is a better place he lived his dream. Great book to read especially during Lenten season.

Bonhoeffer's own works have to me always been suggestive of an impossibly pious author. I am very grateful to Eric Mataxas for revealing the real Dietrich Bonhoeffer who proves to be a truly pious man, not from cloistered abstract study but from utter faithfulness to our Lord in that most testing of places where truth meets power. I will now read Bonhoeffer's own works gladly and with the respect he richly deserves.

heartbreaking at a human level but testimony to the sustaining power of God .great insight into a troubled period of European history

Bonhoeffer remains a prophet, also for this century.

A lesson for our times in grace, humility and inteligence meeting hatred, hubris and ignorance. We pray these times are never repeated again.
