Sky Island

Don't leave this as long as I had to. Found Seraphim (angel) while passing a record store back in '79 and when finding a moment 10 records later to ask about the piece they didn't have a clue what I was on about. I have never been able to find it until now ! Incredible music with an orchestra from heaven. The album is a killer throughout. I have known the title track for many years. Ramsey Lewis has a fine version also but this is the definitive one. Larry Dunn of Earth Wind & Fire fame is all over the album's magical grooves. Don't miss it like I did ! Utterly awe inspiring. Caldera Sky Island was the introduction song to Mellow Maddness on Q94 Sunday Night's! There style of music offered great calm to your spirit in listening to jazz!! With Dianne Reeves singing lead to the song Sky Island with her powerful voice!! Love this group there're an classic to the Jazz World!!!

I looked high and low to replace this album that was and is one of my all time favorites . Thank you as I was able to find it here

Great band, this is undoubtedly their best albumI listened to this album on vinyl since the late seventies and I was waiting for many years to see this album finally released on CD

it took almost 35 years for one of the best records I ever heard to make it on CD - and to enjoy that music without any cracking noise and scraping is quite something.Calder Sky Islands ist a gem - emphatically recommended

Caldera is another example of the niche genre that was jazz fusion back in 70's. Brilliant musicianship, moving compositions and haunting lyrics. They certainly deserve a wider audience.

かつて「レコード・コレクターズ」の＜アース・ウインド＆ファイア＞特集の際、[裏街道的考察]で椿正雄氏によって紹介された名盤。＜アースのラリー・ダンがプロデュースとキーボードで参加している＞ところから選ばれたのだろうが、それだけでなく、＜第三世界からの影響＞という点でも共通している。このグループは、＜南米各地の出身者＞によって成り立っているのだが、ジャズが60年代のボサ・ノヴァとは異なるものとしてブラジルをはじめとした現地の音楽を再発見した頃の嬉々雀躍とした喜びが生々しくとらえられていると思う。＜アメリカの黒人音楽にはなかった豊かなハーモニーとメロディ、そして躍動感ある高音のスキャット・ヴォーカル・ハーモニーなど＞実に相似形のグループではあるものの、出てくるサウンドがこれほど違うことがむしろ楽しい。確かに、当時のフュージョン的ないささかせわしない展開ではある。嫌いな人は嫌いなのかもしれないとも思う。しかし、そうやって音楽を切り捨てる態度もどうかと思う。当方も年齢を重ねるたんびに、余計な時間はないのだから肌に合わない音楽はなるだけ避けたいとは思うものの、せめて1枚まるごと頭から最期まで聴くまでは投げ出しちゃいかんとも思う。“忍耐”も時には必要なんて野暮を言っているんじゃない。ただ、当方のように、生きているあいだに自分の聴きたいサウンドには、なるたけ触れておくに越したことはない、と思っている方には、このアルバムの全聴取をご推薦申し上げたい。それほど、ここには浮ついたヒット願望とは別の真摯な姿勢が聴こえてくる瞬間が何度もあると確約したい。同時期にリリースされたウェザー・リポートのHEAVEY WEATHERが嫌いなわけでもないが、あの完成し切ったにっちもさっちもいかないサウンドと比べると、やはりこのアルバムには高いポテンシャルを感じてしまう。

カルデラのCDは昔一時発売されてた「ドリ−マー」と奇跡的にCD化された「Caldera」だけ持ってます。LPでは全て持ってますが、やはりCD化されてほしいと長く待ってました。これで次は「タイム＆チャンス」もCD化してほしい。海外では根強いファンが個人でMP３化してネットに流してます（でも違法でしょうけど）。今聞くとちょっと古い感じもするフュージョンですが、なんせ白人系のそれには無い熱さと重さが魅力の超絶技巧なグループでした。でもけっこう聞きやすい。タイトル曲はEW&Fのlarry danが作ったとかいう話。若き頃のパット・メセニーも聞きに行っていたとか。
