Five Bloody Graves/Nurse Sherri 2-DVD Grindhouse Edition

Five Bloody Graves
There is mistake on the back jacket of this DVD collection. Richard Dix did not star in Five Bloody Graves. As you know it was his son Robert Dix. To market this movie with a horror flick, does not reflect the the story line at all.

Great Double Drive-In Feature
Nice prints and informative commentary make this DVD a welcome addition to your drive-in collection. So much information on Nurse Sherri including two versions (both are good, one with nudity, one without).A shorter commentary on Five Bloody Graves, but interesting none the less.

Don't bother
Neither movie is presented in its original aspect ratio. I see that Amazon tells us they are 1.33:1, but the 2.35:1 Five Bloody Graves could have been letterboxed within that frame at least. It wasn't. Which makes any reference to this set showcasing the cinematography of Academy Award winner Vilmos Zsigmond a joke. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the set does contain come decent quality drive-in intermission concession shorts. But the producers of the DVD blew it there too by not providing the option to watch the intermission shorts, trailers and feature in order. You can only choose each element independently from the menu page.

Two mismatched 1970's schlock films.
My review is on the Region 1, two disc box set consisting of 'Five Bloody Graves' (1970) & 'Nurse Sherri' (1978). The dates are guide lines only as director Al Adamson and producer Sam Sherman would sometimes have several films on the go together and would return to a feature later to finish it when funds became available. Which begs the question as to how the actors and crew were available later, and not busy working? To put it kindly the actors and crew may not have had too many other projects in the pipeline.'Five...' is a western written by and starring Robert Dix, with much needed support from Jim Davis, JR's dad in 'Dallas' , Scott Brady and John Carradine, two actors who had passed their prime and became bottom feeders of cinema. In my view the film tries to imitate a spaghetti western but only succeeds in coming over as a low budget 'B' support feature. Interesting but awfully done and the acting is hammy and laughable.'Nurse...' is a horror film and a horror to watch too. Weaker than the most excruciating Italian low budget thing that you could find on tape or disc. Not only does it share a theatrical cut showing on disc 1 with 'Five Bloody Graves' but disc 2 is devoted to a showing of the alternate cut --- the 'lost' version. My question would be why or why was it ever found and given breathing space ?Something different, and we all have differing tastes, so there will be someone out there who will enjoy these films.Limited audience I think hence 3 stars for the unusual combo. They might come near the bottom of their respective genres of western & horror but together......... ? At a low price only. As I write prices start at around £30 for this double disc abomination so I feel pretty safe that no one will buy this on my recommendation. No English subtitles ---ludicrous ! It's Region 1, American, and they're far better than us ( usually ) at including subtitles so that's a big no-no with this box set.P.S. My review also comes up on the site of the single disc version of 'Five Bloody Graves' (minus the film 'Nurse Sherri'). My comments apply equally and no English subtitles with either version.
