The debut LP by Algiers is haunted by promises of the past: the rapturous call and response of millenarian gospel, the bellowing urgency of 60s protest soul, the scene-searching intensity of DC hardcore and the smeared viscosity of post-punk and no wave. After all, as Marx once said: “The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living.” But rather than revel in a state of nostalgia, the band wields these burdened visions to charge headlong into the future. Over the album’s eleven tracks, these three émigrés of the American Deep South lay waste to appropriators, oppressors, revivalists and the cultural shock troops of capitalism. Vocalist Franklin James Fisher’s every shriek and incantation will take you from the sweaty fervor of Dennis Edwards-era Temptations through the righteous rebellion of Nina Simone to the solitary midnight howls of PJ Harvey. Shards of Lee Tesche’s guitar, along with Ryan Mahan’s bass pulses and synthesizer slashes, pierce through the processional, transforming neo-modernist hymns with explosions of foreboding and dread that evoke the vanguard of pop experimentation from Suicide to Roland S. Howard. In an era when political subjectivity and human connectivity have been smashed to pieces by the demands of finance capital, Algiers has taken its stance: to maintain fidelity to these subversive spirits and trudge toward the light. While they may never arrive at their destination – consigned to a life of wandering – they conjure the dead sound to life in frightening new directions.

Outstanding Album - A Great Debut!
Infectious, driving rhythms and an ominous undertones are the hallmarks of the songs on this amazing album. The lead singer, Franklin James Fisher is soulful, angry and powerful in equal measures, performing some of the most inspiring and moving songs I've heard in quite a long time. There is a decidedly blues and gospel feel to the songs that reminds me of southern spirituals with the occasional whiff of Motown weaved into the compositions for emphasis. Ryan Mahan and Lee Tesche round out the trio with dead-on guitar and bass performances punctuated with backing vocals and various other weird and wonderful embellishments.The performances seem raw and almost primitive, but that's a deception; the songs are densely mixed with dirty guitar licks, gospel choirs, ambient undertones, strong driving bass lines and almost simplistic drum / rhythm lines all blended together with a pervading cavernous overtone. These songs are absolutely amazing - and with a style that crosses many different stylistic genre's, this is the band everybody will be talking about!

Great cd with a sound you won’t forget.
I like this cd very much. Their music is unique with a sound you won’t forget. I especially like *Old Girl* & *Blood*. The original music video of *Blood* is really one to check out.

My new favorite band
I bought the CD and the digital download on the strength of one song Algiers performed on CBC's Q. This band is mezmerizing! Sonically rich with influences from punk to gospel. I can't stop listening to it. Highly recommended. It's so refreshing to discover a truly creative group.

Amazing, accomplished debut, as revolutionary and jarring as the first "The Pop Group" album, with which it shares genre defying I only hope a dub version is in the works.

Punk is not dead - das liest man immer wieder auf Stickern und fragt sich, ob das wirklich stimmt.Aber diese Platte beseitigt jeden Zweifel!Es gibt diese eine Rockband pro Generation wie die Beatles oder Nirvana, die die Musikrichtung neu erfinden.Das ist Algiers auf jeden Fall gelungen. Ein derart impulsives und kräftiges Werk habe ich selten gehört.11 hammermäßige Tracks hauen die drei dir um die Ohren.In einer Mischung aus Punk, Industrial, Gospel und Elektro. Es ist nicht wirklich einzuordnen und das macht es so gut.Die Texte sind sozialkritisch, viel beschäftigt sich mit der immer noch präsenten Rassenproblematik bezüglich schwarzer Menschen.Sänger Franklin James Fisher ist zum einen ein begnadeter Sänger aber auch ein eindringlicher Prophet, der sich die Seele aus dem Leib singt und schreit. Außerdem spielt er Gitarre, Klavier, Tamburin und bedient die Loops.Die beiden anderen Bandmitglieder stehen ihm in kaum etwas nach. die beeindruckenden Soundcollagen entstehen dadurch, dass alle mehrere Instrumente teilweise zeitgleich bedienen.Absoluter Höhepunkt des Albums ist der Song "Blood". Fisher erreicht die Qualität eines Gospelpriesters, wenn der die düsteren Textzeilen ins Mikro predigt. Begleitet wird er von einem stampfenden Bass, der einem in die Magengrube schlägt und einem Gospelchor.Kauft euch das Album.Geht zu einem Konzert.Das ist für mich die Band des Jahrzehnts

Könnte ich jeden Tag anhören ... und tu es fast auch.
Ich höre das Album nun schon seit über drei Jahren und kann nach wie vor nicht genug davon bekommen.Es hat nicht sofort Klick gemacht und ich brauchte einige Anläufe um es richtig wertzuschätzen, aber dafür hat es im Laufe der Zeit nichts von seiner Power verloren. Kein Stück darauf ist Füllmaterial - jeder Song hat seine Daseinsberechtigung und steht auf eigene Weise heraus. Trotzdem wirkt das Album auch als Ganzes hervorragend.
