Austria's Disastrous Murmur's album "Rhapsodies in Red" is a combination of murky and heavy, a perfect blend that launches this mid-tempo assault on one's senses and doesn't let go.

Great rotten 90s death metal...
Rhapsodies in Red is a plain fun early 90s Death Metal release. I've seen this posted on a lot of lists of old school death metal to check out, and was pleasantly surprised to find this Osmose Productions release on amazon.I'd definitely recommend this album to fans of that early 90s murky death metal sound. Get a copy while they stay in stock!

An overlooked gem
One of the better of the lesser known death metal albums to be released in the early '90s, 1992's "Rhapsodies in Red" was the debut from Austria's Disastrous Murmur, who had already been slogging it out in the underground scene since 1988. The album was originally released by France's Osmose Productions but was licensed for release in the States by JL America in 1993.As you can see by the song titles, horror and splatter are the order of the day here, and the band succeeds in creating a truly sick and unsavory (but in a good way) atmosphere all the way through. The band shows a heavy influence throughout from the early work of their countrymen and pals Pungent Stench, particularly on opener "Disgorged Bowelmovement," which is somewhat similar to the former's "Extreme Deformity." I really like the cool eerie keyboard-like effects on that one and "Dinner is Served." Another major influence seems to be early Napalm Death, particularly on pummeling grinders like "Trashchunk & Garbage." This album also boasts a great production, complete with a crisp sound to the drums and a really evil and sinister low guitar tone. The only reason I rate it four stars instead of five is that the second half isn't as strong as the first, but still very well done death grind overall. If you like the two other bands mentioned, you can't go wrong.(Note to Amazon: Please correct the spelling of this listing -- the right spelling of the band's name is DisasTROUS Murmur, not "Disasterous" as appears above. Because of this error I didn't know until recently that this CD was even on Amazon.)
