Intrepid International Hock Shield Ultra Protector

My 17 yr old horse started to get a hock rub while rising from a lying down position. As anyone knows, the hock is one of the most difficult areas to keep covered. This hock shield is very well designed as it is made out of two sections for mobility and several Velcro attachments for security. The first strap is attached to the shield next to the horse’s hock, then the second is tightened and sandwiched between two straps. The interior is synthetic fleece, which offers good cushioning but the downside is that bedding material gets inside and clings to it. I use a brush to flick off the majority, but there are smaller pieces and slivers that become embedded in the fleece and need to be hand-picked. You absolutely do not want a wood shaving splinter rubbing and jabbing against your horse’s hock. As my horse needs to wear the shield nightly, adding this extra morning chore is frustrating. I suggest the company look into a different lining which would be easy to clean while still offering the necessary soft cushioning. This product is not inexpensive, and the manufacturer states it should last for at least 3 months(?) which makes no sense to me. Time will tell, but the shield looks much sturdier than that. I am deducting one star due to the fleece/shavings issue (which should really be a 1.5 star deduction ~ UPDATE: It has been a month of daily use. My horse likes to sleep on his right side and the right Hock Shield has developed an exterior rub and a tear which is now fraying. I bed the stall using a good deal of large fluffy shavings over a matted floor. The Hock Shield has been very effective in protecting my horse’s hock and the rub which had developed is now almost completely healed. However, if this hock wrap remains usable for only a month or two, I will have to look for an alternative which either lasts longer or is less expensive to replace constantly.

Used to protect a healing injury on my horse’s hock. Stays put even with all day turnout and easy to clean. Will be warm in the summer but hopefully he is fully healed by then.

I'm so bummed. I ordered these a few months ago. I measured per instructions, and I even tried on a friend's pair in the same size and they fit perfectly. I haven't needed them until now, and when I tried to put them on my horse yesterday they were too small! I could sort of get them on but only if I pulled the straps too tight. As soon as he moved they popped off. I'm outside the return window, and the pair I ordered are the largest size. I'm wondering if the pair I got were mislabeled or something.

I have a TB that manges to rip, chew, destroy everything. When I put these on I expected to see them tossed to the side of his stall shredded like an old blanket...and so did everyone else. But the next day they were on and strapped in place and every day since. Buy these, they work. And the synthetic fleece is a nice touch to add extra cushion and protection. FYI: My pictures of the hock boots look bulky because I have a cotton layer on the inside because the sores are draining.

These hock boots have been great for my Warmblood! He dealt with horrible hocks sores which cause him to develop Lymphangitis and these hock boots have been such a help with keeping his hock sore away! Although he still has bouts of lymphangitis from other cuts these boots are great! Wish they could make a whole body boot to keep him from hurting himself! Also have the fetlock boots as well and those help wonderfully as well!

These boots were well made. But oddly, although the right side stayed on well, I could not get the left side to stay on my Arab gelding, even when I duct traped over it! The left side sores were getting worse and bleeding. In desperation, I bought shipping boots that came up high in back to cover the hock (Amigo from Amazon) and left just the two hind boots on all night while my horse was in his stall. They worked great, and the sores are finally healing.

For the price I sure wish they'd last longer than a season. I have 3 horses that need them in the winter due to it being so dry and cold. I take care of them and clean them and take them off during the day but they just don't last. You'd think at the price you could get a few seasons out of them.
