No On/Off Switch
I bought this air compressor (for inflating my car tires) at a Pep Boys store. In my opinion, it is totally unsatisfactory on several counts.First, the pressure gauge on the unit is worse than useless. It is not even approximately accurate. When my good gauge read 25 PSI, the one on the Masterflow unit read between 50 and 60 PSI. Not even close!Second, (and this is the most critical problem for me), it lacks an on/off switch. The instructions imply there is an on/off switch, but there is none. You "turn on" the unit by plugging it into the cigarette lighter and "turn it off" by pulling it out of the cigarette lighter. Because the gauge is nowhere near accurate, this means you have to frequently disconnect the unit from the tire valve stem, check the tire pressure with a more accurate gauge, and then reconnect the unit to the tire valve stem to pump in more air. Assuming you need to inflate all 4 car tires to the proper pressure and assuming you only need to add air 3 or 4 times per tire to do that, that means 24 to 32 trips between a car tire and the cigarette lighter inside the car to turn the compressor on or off. If there had been an off/off switch, like my previous compressor, that number of trips would be reduced to 2!Third, the device has a strong offensive smell (even before its first use). Just handling the device caused that smell to be transferred to my hands. It took much hand washing with soap to remove that smell from my hands.Fourth, one entire side of the information sheet is devoted to more than a dozen safety warnings. These warnings imply it is not safe to use the unit unless you are wearing gloves (to avoid burns) and ANSI Z87.1 approved safety glasses with side shields (to avoid eye and soft tissue damage).Fifth, the instruction sheet states that the device contains cancer-causing lead and recommends the user washes his hands after handling.I returned the unit to the store. To their credit, Pep Boys gave me full store credit for my purchase, since I had returned the device after the store's refund period had expired. However, their refund policy was not displayed in the store, nor was it printed on the sales receipt. After I returned the Pep Boys' compressor, since my previous air compressor for car tires had been bought at Sears many years ago and had worked satisfactorily for probably 2 decades of use, I decided to buy another Sears compressor. So I bought an Air Head 250 PSI Portable Air Compressor from Sears online storefront (since the compressor is not sold in their stores). That turned out to be a big mistake The Sears compressor did not have an on/off switch either, and the attached pressure gauge was also grossly inaccurate.Even worse, Sears online Return Policy is the worst I've ever seen. It is so restrictive and unreasonable, that, in my opinion, it amounts to a No Refund Policy. I doubt many customers would even qualify for a partial refund. Even if the refund is because of a faulty or defective product, Sears will not refund 25% of the customer's purchase amount (which they euphemistically call a "restocking fee" ), nor will they reimburse the customer for the expense of shipping the product back to Sears. It's obvious that Sears intends to keep their profit even if the customer returns the product! (This makes one appreciate Amazon's Return Policy.)Not only will I never purchase anything else from Sears Online Storefront, but I will no longer patronize Sears stores either. Any store whose policy is basically "Screw the customer" is not going to get any of my business in the future.
