Fascinating but not for everyone.
This is an interesting book but don’t expect modern, quality, colourful presentation. In fact any presentation other than text.

An Incredible Achievement
There are a huge number of books out which seek to cover the history of the World Cup. None of them offer the level of depth or detail that this one does. The match reports are exhaustive, thorough and offer a host of little observations which bring the games to life.Of particular note were the tactical elements, offering the formations for every match and explanations of how they were significant in notable games. While the scale is truly epic the exhaustive table of contents makes it easy to navigate and to jump from one game of note to the next.Overall this is a hugely impressive achievement and I'm sure to refer back to it for years to come.

The World at His Feet
This is the most comprehensive book about the World Cup I have ever read and it really whetted my appetite in the run up to the recent Finals in Brazil. What is most impressive is the level of detail the author provides for the earlier international encounters, seemingly just as comfortable describing a Ferenc Puskas cross as a Lionel Messi dribble. Fielder is clearly a master of his subject and deserves much credit for delivering this outstanding read. I can't wait for the European Championships version!

Basic to in depth summaries . Some amusingly caustic remarks to be found
It is what it is ! As the finals become more recognised so the writing becomes more detailed and longer .It's interesting to see the reasons behind national teams not entering the qualifiers or in the early versions declining to attend . All in all a good appetiser for this year's finals .

Fantastic
The only book I've found that covers every single World Cup match ever played, from the squad selection, formations used and how the game played out. The word 'comprehensive' is bandied around a lot but to describe it as such would be entirely accurate. I'd recommend it to all aficionados of the beautiful game and fellow 'stattos'.

Comprehensive
Nice idea and full of interesting detail but, sadly, needed better proof reading. When a player scores from "30 years out" you know there are issues to say nothing of the "Yugoslav " goalkeeper playing in a game between Czechoslovakia and Northern Ireland. Too many avoidable mistakes to recommend with any conviction.

Best of it's type!
This book is exactly as advertised on the tin, but what lifts it above it's few competitors in this narrow genre, is the inclusion of every group match. The writing has a freshness to it, as opposed to Glanville's World Cup books which just feel like he uses the same formula for every match report, and just tacks on a new one every 4 years. My only criticism of Fielder's book is a minor stylistic one, I found that having the match stats before the match report interrupted the narrative flow. Maybe they should be placed at the end of each report.A must read for Football fans, if you can read only one World Cup book, make it this one!

I have read many books about the World Cup history, and this is the most complete and detailed of all.
A fantastic book that includes all alignments, goals, scorer, minute ... and what is most important to me and unlike others, chronicling every one of the matches, and describing as occurred goals scored. An absolute gem.

Extensive and Authoritative
This author truly did his homework. This is as thorough a history of the World Cup as I've ever seen. He provides detailed summaries of each tournament as well as the games. The book flows like a well-written novel, however. It was hard to put down.
