Description
Product description As on 1994's Music for the Native Americans, Contact from the Underworld of Redboy finds former Band leader Robbie Robertson incorporating Native American musical textures into ultramodern soundscapes. Once again, Robertson fares best when he turns the microphone over to his guests. Verdell Primeaux and Johnny Mike's "Peyote Healing" is almost otherworldly in its beauty, and political prisoner Leonard Peltier's guest rap on "Sacrifice" lends the record some legitimate political weight. In comparison, Robertson's mannered, overly processed vocals make songs like "In the Blood" sound like Don Henley attempting a Native American version of Paul Simon's album Graceland; one hopes that this wasn't exactly what he was trying for. --Dan Epstein .com As on 1994's Music for the Native Americans, Contact from the Underworld of Redboy finds former Band leader Robbie Robertson incorporating Native American musical textures into ultramodern soundscapes. A beautiful and timely walk through American Indian History and modern society......
I have had this cd FOREVER!! I LOVE IT!!! Robbie Robertson is an astounding song writer and musician. This CD is one of my favorites. The Title: "Contact from the Underworld of Redboy" is fitting as being an American Indian in this day and age means that you have to straddle two worlds, your Indigenous world, whose roots run deep, as well as the acculturated, mainstream world. (I.E. the one that provides you with a job to pay for your house/rent/bills etc.)And as sad as it is, many of the issues addressed on this CD is unknown to many Americans, hence, underworld. But there was also a time when we American Indians were banned from practicing our ceremonies and traditions, but many continued to do so, just "underground" which is also another reference to underworld. The lyrics on this CD are strong, thought provoking and no matter the decade, TIMELY. What is great about his lyrics is that anyone listening who may not know squat about American Indian history can get a few mini lessons. With his lyrics addressing assimilation, as he does in the song "Rattlebone", (which is one of my favorites) or the high cost to be Native American in what was a rapidly changing world as he does in "Sacrifice". With Leonard Peltier's voice mixed in and Robertson's lyrics, it becomes a haunting, powerful piece. The song "In the Blood" deals with the effects of first contact, but the following lyrics show how no matter how many scars we carry, we can't let go of who we are and where we come from because it flows through us, remains a part of us. "I can't let go of the painted desert I can't let go of the old way I can't let go of the homeland It's in the blood, I can't let go"This song is reminiscent of his song "Word of Fire, Deeds of Blood" which is on his other cd Robbie Robertson: Songs for the Native Americans. I'll do a review of that one as well, and if you are not familiar with it, you should really check it out. As a song writer, Robertson has full control of his craft, as those of us who've been aware of his career since his membership in The Band. His lyricism does not disappoint on this CD either, but remains powerful while flexing his lyrical muscles. For example in the song: "Take Your Partner By the Hand" the marvelously, gorgeous line: "She's approached by some wild-eyed poet drunk with love" The impact is further made by his smooth voice that holds a power all its own. Most of the music is dancey and quick paced even when dealing with heavy material, which is so metaphorical for how life as an American Indian is. We're having to dance as fast as we can while dodging huge obstacles placed in our path just to make it in a world that would rather see us disappear or silently stand and look beautiful, all the while hanging onto our culture, our language and our traditions. If you have not heard this CD, I strongly suggest you do so, as it's a gateway for further study. For example after hearing the song "Sacrifice" if you are not aware or only slightly aware of the Incident that caused Leonard Peltier's imprisonment, you can finish listening to this CD and then go find and watch "Incident at Ogalala" on dvd or streaming media. (please do this responsibly and legally.) This album is just another powerful and important contribution released into the world by a talented and significant American Indian musician. Robertson remains a hero and shining example for many who wish to walk in two worlds successfully.

Love Robbie Robertson. He is so much more that "just a former member of The Band". I like his new stuff even better. So creative and such a talent!

Solid.
With some native american heritage myself, I've sampled a few artists (Nakai, etc). But I put this album and Robertson's "Music for Native Americans" together at the top of my "native american" list. It's traditionally influenced without being trite, modern without being too edgy. Thumbs up.

One of my all-time favorites
No one compares to Robbie Robertson when he decides to create Native American music. Awesome CD that I still listen to years after I bought the first one.

Danke RobbieFast wie ein Geschwister und doch ganz anders :R.R.and the Red Road Ensemble,Musik for the Native Americans

Völlig abgetaucht....in eine andere Welt!!!
Contact from the underworld of a red boy...........bei dieser CD gehen die Meinungen bestimmt in alle Richtungen.
