From celebrated author Janette Oke (The Love Comes Softly series) comes a rigorous and romantic adventure as epic as the wide frontier. Erin Krakow (Army Wives), Daniel Lissing (Eye Candy), Jack Wagner (Melrose Place) and Lori Loughlin (Full House, 90210) star in When Calls The Heart, "a beautiful story with roots in relationships, self-empowerment, and the enduring power of love" (Common Sense Media). Elizabeth Thatcher (Krakow) is a strong-willed teacher who has foregone the life of the big city and found a job, a home – and a bit of unexpected romance with a handsome Mountie named Jack – in the small frontier town of Hope Valley. But life on the frontier can hand you many tough turns, and so it is for Jack and Elizabeth as they face their very different upbringings, the pressures put upon them by family, rival suitors and even various criminal counterfeiters and kidnappers in their quest to find their place in this remote and rugged land. 10 DVD Collector's Edition includes Season 2 - 10 DVD Collector's Edition includes the following: Disc 1: Trials of the Heart (Movie Version) Disc 2: Heart and Soul (Movie Version) Disc 3: Heart of the Family (Movie Version) Disc 4: Heart and Home (Movie Version) Disc 5: Follow your Heart (Movie Version) Disc 6: Episodes as aired on the Hallmark Channel Disc 7: Episodes as aired on the Hallmark Channel Disc 8: Episodes as aired on the Hallmark Channel Disc 9: Special Features Disc Disc 10: Instrumental CD

When Calls the Heart Still Shines
I have read many of the more negative reviews, and I am puzzled by them. WCTH is a wonderful series, family-friendly, and wholesome. S1 presented an overview of Coal Valley, and we were introduced to some wonderful characters. By S2, Coal Valley is now Hope Valley and a rising lumber town. It is more established (as was the case during the industrial period in our nation), and the series takes a turn. The main characters: Elizabeth, Jack, and Abigail, I think, are further developed. In this season, we are able to zoom into the parts that have made them who they are as of that time. This is primarily true of Elizabeth and Jack. We are introduced to their family members, past relationships they've had, the conflicts they face, and all that pulls them away and toward each other. I like that! People are complex. Life is a continuation of character development. As for Abigail, she continues to be the rock that she was in S1, but we are beginning to see the more intricate woman that she is. She has a daughter-in-law (a wonderful addition, and who I hope will continue into S3), she gains some would-be suitors, and she is discovering that they, too, have a back story. Rather than being pulled in so many directions by the addition of these new characters, I am being drawn in! As far as Rosemary, Jack's past flame, I think she is a fabulous addition to the series. Her levity kicks in during heavier moments with other characters, and she is able to "lighten" the atmosphere. The relationship she is developing with Lee,the lumber mill owner, is fun! Their chemistry is as vibrant as Jack's and Elizabeth's, only in a less complicated way. I, for one, hope to see Lee and Rosemary back in Hope Valley in S3.I like the way the writers are putting together stories about other characters. After all, this is an entire town. I want to get to know its residents. Also, once Jack and Elizabeth are married (which I hope happens during the Christmas special), viewers are going to want something more. A series shouldn't settle into an "it's finished" kind of feeling. Those who are comparing When Calls the Heart to Little House on the Prairie, that show was meant to focus on a family. However, by the end of that series, the majority of the original characters were not even part of that cast. With WCTH, I can see this series evolving into something that keeps the same characters for many years to come--while adding others (children for Jack/Elizabeth, husband for Abigail, new flame for Charles...). As others have posted, I do enjoy watching the children and their interactions at school and with their families. I'd like to see more of that in S3. I also hope Elizabeth gets back to writing in her diary. I'd like to see some Hamilton characters move to Hope Valley: Charles, Julie, Jack's brother, Tom, and perhaps, Nurse Faith.Other impressions: I do not view the show as a soap opera. The clothing is different than S1, particularly what is worn in Hamilton high society. I do not find it offensive or inappropriate, but that is just me. I, personally, do not care if the clothing presentation is totally historically accurate. If I did, I'd watch a documentary. I "own" both When Calls the Heart seasons through Prime Video, and I have watched the shows over and over. Each time, I learn or discover something new. There is much life wisdom written into the lines of the characters. It would be a shame for this series not to be re-considered because of some of the negative reviews. When Calls the Heart shines brightly in the dark reality of today's TV viewing culture. Kudos to Hallmark for not caving to "mainstream" culture and for fulfilling some of the entertainment desires of the more conservative viewing audience.Overall: I have both S1 and S2 on Amazon Prime

When Calls the Heart is a sweet charmer
The show is sett in the "Wild West" of the early 1900's in a Canadian frontier town, Coal Valley, whose primary industry is -- surprise! -- coal mining, complete with muddy streets and a saloon and wooden sidewalks, a set straight out of any American Western movie of the last 100 years. This family-friendly series is beautifully photographed in a rural mountain setting that is picture postcard beautiful. This is a Hallmark Channel production, after all. In any case, the show harkens to a simpler time -- that may or may not have ever existed -- but is nevertheless charming and appealing in its simplicity. The core of the show centers around a fresh-out-of-college, young, high society lady who rebels against her upper crust family to go out west to become a rural school teacher in this poor mining community. This is a fish-out-of-water story that centers on the school marm's trials and tribulations in this rough-and-ready setting, where book learning is not the highest priority for the locals, mostly salt-of-the-earth-type coal miners.Along the way, our heroine starts to fall for the local Mountie, complete with the red serge coat and brown felt campaign hat of the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police). A story that is straight from a romance novel. Literally. The show's title comes from Janette Oke's book.I have to add that I can't watch this show and the interplay between the Mountie and the school marm without thinking of Dudley Do Right and Sweet Nell of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame. Some of the sparkling grins from these two characters seem to be an homage to that earlier show.Of course, the chaste relation between the clueless but valiant Dudley Do Right character-- with his dashing red serge jacket and jaunty brown felt campaign hat -- and the innocent and naive Sweet Nell character in the cartoon show were a cliche, funny and charming precisely because they were cliches, but warm and friendly cliches that we grew up with as children, and still cherish. At least I do.The relation between the two main characters of When Calls the Heart does justice to the cartoon's sweet and funny tradition. This show is a family friendly charmer, and so enjoyable, especially if you want to escape to a simpler, less complicated time where good was clearly good and bad was clearly bad -- Dudley Do Right versus Snidely Whiplash, right? -- as anyone can clearly see. No grey areas allowed. A spiritual palate cleanser, if you will. A very pleasant escape from reality and a guilty pleasure.
